Hellbore,
Great looking gun. I am sure you will have no problem defending yourself with that should a black bear come to call at the ol' campsite. Now just obey the first three laws of defensive shooting:

1. Practice
2. Pratice some more.
3. Practice a lot more.

The good part about selecting this gun over the S&W, is that the Ruger will stand up to all the practice you want with as heavy a round as you want.

ENJOY !!!!!!!!!

and be safe.

PS Here is my preferred weapon for black bear defense.
(The larger round in the picture is the 445 Supermag, its little brother is the 44 magnum. The Dan Wesson will shoot either one.)

Rolltide,

Thank you for posting that link to the JJHack post. After reading reams and reams of speculative BS on this subject, this was the first well-informed info that I've found on the Internet.

If the safety was handy and blocked the hammer or sear

I'd prefer it to having to work the action or thumbcocke the hammer. Of course, it makes more sense to just use a BAR autorifle in the first place. The 338 or 300 Win Mag can certainly outperform the 45-70 lever as to power and repeat hit speed, and they also offer 3x as much range, should you want or need such.

Lobotomy boy,
I had similar experience with reading volumes on the internet and definitely found JJHACKS posts the most informed I had ever read on the subject. He is a moderator over at Graybeards Outdoors, in the African Hunting forum. He will usually respond to questions if he is not in Africa at the time. He is a fountain of knowledge on big game hunting and shooting dangerous game.

A hunting guide once told me for bear a 357 revolver with a four inch barrel was the best choice for a handgun as a backup to a rifle.

He said in a critical situation you would want to be able to shoot the bear with multiple shots as fast as you can pull the trigger. He implied the 357 would allow you to do that better than larger calibers.

Not sure if all that is true, but it seems reasonable to me.

A few big 335gr lead flat nose 45LC would also seem to do the job, but you may be able to put more 357 mags into the bear in the same amount of time.

I suppose it would come down to the ability of the shooter.
