I have been wanting a regular 686 snubby in addition to my 3" 686 CS-1 and found this one on the internet a couple of weeks ago. What really attracted me to this one is that it's old enough to have a hammer mounted firing pin and be without lock, but new enough to be a 7-shot. After a long wait, it arrived yesterday and I very quickly fell in love with it.

It didn't look quite this nice, however, when I received it. (Here's where the real charm of a stainless finish comes into play.) There was a fairly significant scratch on the side plate (which I didn't think I would be able to get out) and a number of smaller scuffs, minor scratches, and discolorations all around from just general use. It was pretty dirty as well around the sides of the hammer and internally a littly dirty.

So I completely dismantled the gun down to the bare frame, spent a couple of hours with a Scotch-brite pad, some bore swabs and Flitz, some FP-10 and tender loving care.

All the scratches and discoloration came out and the finish took on a beautiful, bright gleam. The gun looks even better than new now. I did a minor action job, cleaned it all up, put it back together, put on a nice pair of Ahrends round butt grips, and test fired it. Very comfy to shoot... absorbs heavy loads with ease and accuracy is awesome.

The gun came out even better than I expected. In short order, this gun has become more of a favorite than I had any idea it would. The balance and feel in the hand is awesome.

I wanted a snubby .357 that I could shoot fairly stout loads through without much concern (something I do little of with my classic K-frames) so this 686 fits the bill perfectly. The lack of an internal lock is great. And holding seven rounds is a wonderful bonus. Here are some pics of it from today:

Oh Don - oh Don ... wherefore dost thou suffer this weakness of will!? MORE guns?! :D:D

Hey - what can I say?! <slobber, crave, covet> - oh my - good ol' six shots and ''one for luck''. NICE ... <more slobber>.

Tell ya what - I ain't half glad I now have a fast connection ... so as to get those huge pic files down quick!! Lovely pics ... but then what else do we come to expect from the Hart-man!! :)

<lust, envy, even more slobber> :p

Hey Chris... yes... there are a few more to be photographed in the weeks ahead, but at this point, I have most of the guns I'd really like to have, so there won't be that many more to come...

And yes, a fast connection is fantastic! :D

Another great looking wheelie and excellent pix as usual. Whenever I'm on the boards I look specifically to see if you've posted any new pictures. I am curious, Mr. DHart, since your taste for 2-1/2" and 3" J's, K's and L's has resulted in such a wonderful collection, humor us 'droolers', will you? Which one is your favorite? And if they are not the same, which do you carry most? Shoot the most? What loads do you use?

How about the rest of you.. Not your own favorite gun, your favorite DHart gun?!

Jim... thanks so much for appreciating the pics. Of course it must be obvious that I just love creating beautiful images of guns...I get a great deal of satisfaction from doing this work. And I'm really glad that some others enjoy seeing the pics.

My favorite gun? Man, that's a tough question. I'd have to say at the moment it's this 686+ 2.5" 7-up beauty. It really feels wonderful in the hand, handles heavy loads with great ease and comfort, is accurate, balances well, looks great, and will stand up to a lot of shooting! My 19-5 2.5" that I wrote about in another thread is certainly up there as a major favorite as well. A 2.5" 19 is a classic beauty that should live forever. And they feel magnificent in the hand.

I really have to say that whichever of my guns is in my hand at the moment is my favorite, because in many ways that's true. They're all great guns with different personalities. But definitely the 2.5" and 3"ers are my favorites. They just offer such a nice feel, weight, balance and convenience that guns with longer barrels don't offer. Just my preference, that's all. I do love my 4" 586 and 4" 681 as well, though. I have a cherry condition 6" 686-no dash which is a fine gun, but I could easily do without it and never miss it. And I have some J's that are very nice pocket guns, but not what I'd call "favorites" by any means. And I have some N's (.357, .44mag, .45 Colt) that are magnificent revolvers which I enjoy having and shooting, all 3" or 3.5", but they're not my "favorites". And a 696 3" .44 spl. which I really enjoy, but again it's not one of the "favorites".

OK... if I had to pick 6 favorites:
• 686-4+ 2.5"
• 686 CS-1 3"
• 586- 4"
• 19-5 2.5"
• 13-3 3"
• 65-5 3"

One of these days you are gonna find yourself wishing you had a long barrelled revolver. Then what will you do with all of your amazingly attractive shorties? AHA, so there!

I am no longer QUITE so jelous of all the really nice guns that find their way into your hands.

Chuck... wouldn't my 6" 686 count as a long barrel? ;) From there I jump up to a 16"... Trapper lever rifles that is! My favorite rifles are 16" Winchester 92's and 94's... when I need a long barrel, they're my "go to" guns!

Not my pics, but my guns look just like 'em!

That 686 is simply gorgeous. I'm speechless. Thanks for the great photos. Whew.

Your photos are outstanding! Actually, because of them, I ordered the same pistol today. I was considering a S&W chambered in .357 Magnum, and your photos convinced me that this is the right one to buy. Please tell me more about its grips.

lunde... I cannot see how anyone would be disappointed with this magnificent revolver. I have one in 6" and it's just too big and bulky, the 4"ers are better and a nice compromise, but the 2.5" is just too handy, nimble, and quick to pass up. You'll have lots of power with the 2.5" barrel... it gives up very little indeed in power and accuracy. For example, my preferred defense load is Winchester's 145 gr. Silvertip and those 145 grainers fly at 1241 fps with nearly 500 fpe from the 2.5" barrel... that's a ton of power in a very controllable and tidy package with 7 rounds. Anyway... I could go on about the gun, but you know what you need to know.

For me, these grips MAKE the gun. I can't stand the Hogue rubbers, besides ugly, they feel too thin side to side for me. These grips fill the hand beautifully and so smoothly. They are tight and snug under heavy recoil with the finger grooves. The gun is a joy to hold in the hand. (I do fondle these quite a bit because they just feel so good.)

The grips are Ahrends Exotic Cocobolo round butt grips with finger grooves... they're called "Exotic" because of the figure in the wood. Available (sometimes) from Brownells. S&W sells them, but not sure if they have the exotic figure. You can also buy them directly from Kim Ahrends... not sure of his number, but do some bush beating and it will fall out.

The Ahrends round butt finger groove grips that aren't exotic (the ones from S&W) look just like these on my 629:

You're going to love the gun~! :p
