So how would you define ‘heavily armed’?

Heavily armed man arrested near UCLATuesday, September 02, 2008 | 6:07 PM LOS ANGELES, CA -- A man accused of shooting at a traffic light was arrested near the University of California at Los Angeles with five loaded semiautomatic pistols and thousands of rounds of ammunition in his possession, police said.

Gene Bush, 52, was booked for investigation of negligently discharging a firearm after being arrested late Friday by campus police.

Police searched him, his van and a storage unit, finding weapons, ammunition and what police called an anti-government manifesto.

"Given the situation, with the amount of guns and ammunition involved, we thought it best that he remain in custody until we know the full story behind him," said UCLA police Sgt. Phil Baguiao. "We would consider him a danger to society given the circumstances."

Police said officers found Bush carrying the pistols -- which were equipped with laser sights -- and 400 bullets. They also found another 7,800 rounds of ammunition in his van and 3,000 more in his storage locker, police said.

A UCLA police news release said Bush appeared to have no criminal history and was living out of his van.
After his arrest, Bush made anti-government statements and told police to look in his nearby suitcase for "the secret," the release said. A Los Angeles police bomb squad found timers, paint thinner and other suspicious items inside, as well as his manifesto.

UCLA police spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein said police believe Bush was acting alone and didn't have a specific target. "He had writings and a lot of them seemed to be anti-government, talk about 9/11," she said.

It wasn't immediately clear why police didn't announce Bush's arrest until Monday, more than three days after the incident. It wasn't known if Bush had an attorney.

Not heavily armed; armed with very light weapons.

He had several handguns and quite a bit of ammunition, but "heavily armed" to me means something crew served or special delivery via radio.

Of course the fact that he appears to be a nutjob isn't going to help him any...

Heavily armed is so relative.

If he was going after a racoon he was heavily armed.

If he expected a squad of Marines or even 3 men with rifles then he was not heavily armed.

To me, 'heavily armed' pertains to hardware that can be carried and employed by a single person that the average civilian in the States will probably not have access to, e.g., selective fire rifles, light machine guns, recoiless rifles, and RPGs.

To me heavily armed includes crew served weapons like a TOW missle launcer or a 105mm weapon system.

Trying not to be picky about wording, anyone going about their normal everyday business carrying 5 pistols is heavily armed.

Of course you could make up all kinds of silly technical arguments about why it isn't, and play all kinds of wordsmithing games, but you would still be wrong.

Let me guess.
five loaded semiautomatic pistols
Two Ravens, a Lorcin and two High Points.

Deadly lasers oh noes:rolleyes:

what police called an anti-government manifesto.
Ron Paul's book.

UCLA police spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein said police believe Bush was acting alone and didn't have a specific target. "He had writings and a lot of them seemed to be anti-government, talk about 9/11," she said.
I say paranoid Ron Paul supporting 9/11 troofer with a few handguns. Probably an idiot, but no more a terrorist than the Keystone Kops are elite law enforcement.

If your likely adversary dons a body armor vest and rides in an APC, then one might require something more formidable than a garden-variety rifle, shotgun, carbine, or handgun.

If the guy lives in his van one assumes that all his worldly possesions are there as well. It's not like the guy was packin' 5 pistols , and I didn't read anywhere that the pistols were illegals.

Any middle-aged American male of typical weight, and carrying a .22 pocket pistol is both heavy and armed. :)

For a scrawny European (assuming they could carry weapons) I think it would take multiple full-size 1911s and shotguns to meet the same criteria. But then he'd probably collapse under all the weight.

Heavily armed seems to be a synonym...

in the news for "armed enough to imply he was ready and planning to do serious damage, unless he was on his way to a competition." The shattered traffic light suggests no competition was on his schedule today.

I often have (in my CCW capacity) 2 pistols and 50 rounds on my person. Five pistols and 400 seems a bit much.

I personally don't quibble with the term in this case--and am not predisposed to come to (even the linguistic) aid of some guy who might have been planning some real harm.

I think they might have got him just in time.

I can't say I've ever shot a streetlight. So I don't know what you would consider heavily armed for streetlight shooting.
