So I joined the .300 BLK ranks

Enjoy !

I am a member of this club too and I am now seeing LOTS of that ammo for sale.

just found 2 boxes of 120 grain at a gun show for 17.+ per,so I added that to my collection that now numbers about 2 K rounds.

I do not buy subsonic as I don't live in a free state [ NY ] so no cans on our tools.

Most of my ammo is 110 grain and its varmint class,as well as a few boxes of Hog Hammer 130 grain.

Not had a shot at a hog with her yet, possible this April.

I've got a couple of SKSs for that niche.
How well do they suppress? Are they efficient and still suppress in a short barrel? Do they cycle subsonics reliably? Where do you buy subsonic 7.62x39mm? Had much luck loading 220rd bullets and fitting the magazine and throat?

It's not the same niche. 300 BLK can hold it's own against the 7.62x39 (a little weaker up close but more retained energy down-range) but that is not at all where it shines.

Mike has a good point, it is a jack of all trades and master of none. Lots of rounds beat it at one thng or another but it can do a little of everything, just not best at anything.

I think it is pretty close to ideal as a subsonic suppressed SBR. Turns your AR into a .45 +P MP5 up close but has much longer legs. The Seals probably wished they has such a nifty package in '89.

I would not own a 300 BLK if I did not have a 30 cal suppressor.

I deleted some off-topic posts that were derailing this thread. This thread's not about Fudds or Mall Ninjas, nor a debate about whether suppressors are cool and useful or just more tactical gimcrack.

Ideal for what use? Subsonic there are lots of heavy 45 acp bullets, cheap and they were all designed for the speeds they are running.

Better ballistic coefficient of the 308 bullet will give it advantages at longer ranges but running subsonic speeds what are we taking about when we say "much longer legs"?

A "slick" bullet like a 208g Hornady a max has a BC of .648, with a 1.5" sight height and a vital zone of 6" maximum point blank range is 112 yards at 1050 fps and it has 509 ft lbs at the muzzle and 478 ft lbs at 100.

A 45 acp 230 has a BC of .184 everything the same has a max PB range of 108 yds, with 563 ft lbs at the muzzle and 459 ft lbs at 100 yds.

12' less range inside the same window and 19 ft lbs is not a lot to me.

Take something like the 458 socom with 500g bullets with a BC of .287 everything else the same as the two above and you get a MPBR of 110 yds with 1224 ft lbs at the muzzle and 1068 ft lbs at 100 yds. That is a loss of 6 feet of range inside the same window but a gain of 590 ft lbs of energy.

OK, so kinda following the theme here....

I was looking at making an AR pistol with quick detach barrel and folder stock. Add a suppressor and holo sight. Was gonna be a .300 BLK but now I'm rethinking of going to the SOCOM for the added thump.

I've had a SOCOM so I'm familiar with it's upside/downside, but that was a regular upper. So, how would it do in a pistol length barrel, and is such a thing available?

Edit to add: just got to thinking, I believe this would be legal for deer in Indiana whether pistol or rifle. Was thinking about the pistol idea strictly to be handy, but maybe with the quick detach that wouldn't be so important. Supressors are now legal here

I don't know about laws in your State but in TX we have been able to use suppressors on hogs and other nongame animals for a long time and recently it opened up for game animals too.

The 458 socom and 300 blk both use "magnum pistol powders" and thus have similar losses from shorter barrels (not as drastic as .223 for example but not as little as 9mm).

Making a pistol with a stock is a no go, that would make it an SBR.

Not sure about QD barrels I always just use the two pins and swap the entire upper, optic an all.

Powders I used were H-110, AA1680, or Lil Gun. Guess I'm wondering if somebody makes a SOCOM pistol length barrel. Should suppress easily enough. The QD barrel was just to make it handy for transport.

edit to add I just asked Mr. Google. Found some.

I use H110-2400 for my super loads and powders as fast as HS-6 for my sub 458 loads.

Again there are two retained detent pins that hold an upper on a lower that are already on every AR to make them half size for transport. I understand that "free and functional" doesn't always trump "cool" though.

A regular 16" AR will go almost as compact as other take downs.

With a brace and folder, it could be about as short as the length of the lower alone. The the barrel snaps off and it's about the same length as the lower. The whole thing fits in a canvas bag maybe 8" x 12" x 3"

My 300 BLK. There are several rectangular bags out there that it will fit in. I keep my 300 BLK stored in two pieces in the safe.

Not as compact as my Sub 2000, but pretty good.

Now take that and shorten the barrel by about 1/2 and pop it off/on.

Then, shorten the butt stock by 40% and fold it flat against the lower

And then suppress it.

Local dealer has one in .300 BLK. Just wonder about the SOCOM.

Without a tax stamp, this is what I am stuck with.

With a tax stamp, or two, you can really get it compact.

Wow, yours looks a lot like mine! yes its still a pistol until my form 1 comes through. Shot if for the first time today, really impressed. Im waiting on my dies from Dillon then I will be a happy camper!

Other than the can, why would you need a tax stamp? Build as a pistol and you don't need one.
