So now, you have a 4" 629 and a 6" 629 and.....

you are inclined to loan one to your brother for a rather indefinite amount of time.... you know how brothers can be.

Which one do you let the short-sighted, caught flat-footed, didn't get his own-damn-gun in time bum borrow?

I'm leaning towards keeping the 4" as in-hand and relegate the 6" to being in-the-bush, so to speak. The sight and grips from the 6" will stay with the 4"

I know that either way, this goof will retroactively have desired the other but in this case the literal beggar can NOT be the chooser.

So, what say you? One is going to him for a bit - which would you hang onto?

MY preference would be the 6” as well. I agree with @adcoch1

If I were going to use the revolver for self defense and CCW I would say the 4”, but I am sure you already have other selections for that.

6” revolvers have a longer sight radius so they are inherently more accurate, at least for me.
You get more juice from your ammo from a 6”.
The 6” just looks meaner and cooler.
Dirty Harry carried a 6” model 29, not a 4”. He probably loaned it to his brother…hahaha.

My 2 cents.

Don’t you have an el cheapo gun he can use?
@jmars comment made me think of my brother. I gave him a beloved SMLE because I thought he would appreciate it and take care of it. Boy was I wrong.
Good point there too.

Sadly, aside from a .32 I don't really have any revolver *loaners* to speak of anymore as I've been deliberately culling the herd. Generally speaking, nothing as close to a pairing as the 629s. But then, that pairing is a poor bracket to apply to what I do or don't loan him now that I think of it.

Sell him the one you never want to see again, with the understanding that you have the right of first refusal to buy it back if he decides to sell it. It might get taken care of that way. Maybe.
Sell it to him? That's a hoot!

Then, he'd act like he owns it and still not get around to paying for it.

I would keep them both and not loan out either, because I know how brothers can be.

I'm with you. I don't have a brother but my wife has a few. I learned many years ago not to loan any of them anything. What ever I loaned I eventually had to go get as none ever returned anything and when I got whatever it was I was dumb enough to loan out it was in seriously bad shape.

Pump shotguns are still plenty available in nearly every store I have gone to lately. They don’t break the bank. The ammo might, but for home protection a clustered 7/8 ounce of bird shot will sure put a hurtin’ on any malcontents that are there to cause harm.

Just a thought.

Disinclined to loan anything to my brother but let's say it's my step father it'll probably be in better shape than when I loaned it out I think it would depend on what he wants it for hd self defense then the 4 inch side arm for hunting then the six inch would be what gets to go with him.

Bear in mind, he's giving a gun to his *brother*, probably for *protection*. Unless he really doesn't like his brother; I'd at least give him a .25 Auto- not a .22 of any sort.
Too true.

Also, I have any number of semis but, he and magazines? Not in a clinch.

Eventually I'll get a deal on a couple of Charters which would be just the thing for him.

Until then....

Todd.

I gave my son my 6" 629 and kept my 4" 629 Mountain Revolver both .44 mag
Aside from yours being a *Mountain* - have you had occasion to wish for the 6" instead?

I do confess that were mine a Mountain Gun - my decision would be no decision at all.

Todd.

Not knowing what else resides in your safe it’s hard to know if you have close duplicates that can fill in for the loaned Smith until it returns home. If you have a close duplicate, then send the corresponding S&W to the brother. (In my case I have a few longer barreled +.40 caliber magnums, so I would send the 6” and hang onto the 4”.)

Second consideration is which gun means more to you? Send the lesser loved piece, if it comes back damaged (or not at all) the feeling of unhappiness with your brother may not be as great.

Tough call! You have more faith in your brother than I do with my siblings. ;)

Stay safe.

Ultimately, after I posted above about getting a couple-few Charter Arms for the family, I got to thinking about another of my as yet unconsidered .44s.

It hadn't even occurred to me to give-loan him my Target Bulldog!:thumbup::thumbup:

I guess I'll retrieve the cabin gun for him and replace it with something I don't care to lose to him.... indefinitely.;)

So here's to you weirdos (generally, only gun-folk would debate 2 inches.... generally:D) for engaging in the conversation.

While you haven't solved the 4"/6" definitively - you have brought to mind that Bulldog which being out of sight was also out of mind until this thread.

Thanks all.

Todd.

Might we see this Target Bulldog before it vanishes forever ?
