So now, you have a 4" 629 and a 6" 629 and.....

Might we see this Target Bulldog before it vanishes forever ?
Here's an old picture. It's at the horse property right now but it's looked the same for the nearly 40 years that I've owned it.

I know I'll be able to get it back when I wave a shiny new charter under his nose.

Interestingly, currently, every other one of my CAs is on loan to family members too.

Todd.

Aside from yours being a *Mountain* - have you had occasion to wish for the 6" instead?

I do confess that were mine a Mountain Gun - my decision would be no decision at all.

Todd.
I carried a 4" barrel M29 from late 70s till the mid 90s when I found my Mountain Revolver of 1989 . The 4" heavier barrel has advantages in a gun fight, the Mountain packs easier. I also have a Model 29-2 8 3/8 I carried all over in a Jackass shoulder rig in the 1980s which is like a short carbine :) BIG wild Boar medicine and all the bigger Alaskan stuff too . The 6" 629 I bought from a Navy Seal and have the Mad Dog under water holster for it too. It was basically only dived a few times :) My son , being a globe trotting Benthic Scientist had to have it :) I did keep a Astra .44 mag that in some ways is sweeter than a Model 29 and after I sell or distribute the "nice " stuff I will die with making it easier on my widow, that will be my final big revolver .

The Astra 6" .44 mag below : That would be a good loaner , if I didn't want to keep it till the end

I have 12 brothers and sisters. I'm not inclined to borrow 8 of them gun related stuff. The other 4 are more prepared than I am.

Before my brother went on an AK fishing trip, I loaned him my 4"624 regulated for the Buffalo Bore 255 gr hard casts. Since then, he has become an AK resident and picked-up his own 6" 629. I would prefer a 4" for bear defense duties, but I think he got a good deal on the 6".

If this decision is really that hard then why not let him pick?

Me I’d tell him to buy his own, then I’d buy an 8” to complete the trifecta. But me my brother are like that, he would tell me the same.

Never meant to imply that it was hard.

Merely another barrel-length discussion with a couple of twists.

I already have both.
The *loan* means I'm not necessarily getting rid of one.
My brother is coming up to being in need of a gun and I am, after a fashion, rather gun-poor.
If he were in a position to buy his own I'd have steered him that way. Too, there's the good-karma on my end as I've been after the family's '73 Kenworth *narrow-nose* that he's been in neglectful custody of.
Already got fully shed of two 8 inchers as they were completely useless in my world. But, I completely get your point on that score.

I'll not - nor ever tolerate - a scenario in which one of my close (RESPONSIBLE) family members or true-friends would have needed a firearm and for whatever reason they did not have one while I have more than one safe full of them.

Much my thinking as well.

In general, I've found my 4" to carry and draw superbly from my Galco hybrid holster. The 6 is a bit more of a commitment and the 8 inchers that I had were damn near comical to carry or draw in a pinch.

I completely understand, out of your abundance, give.

THIS, THIS is heresy for which you should be beaten until good sense returns. ;)

You've had respectable positive experience with new CA ?

Nothing new from CA at all.

I generally read about poor cylinder indexing, inconsistent chambers, sight alignment/barrel clocking issues along with CA's eternal loosening hardware.

I figure if I buy-in some CA's I'll go over each with a fine toothed comb immediately.

I may go Taurus as well. My experience with them has been consistently positive but the same combing for them out of the box.

Well.... there goes my yearning for a new Bulldog Classic... though I still want one.

I'm not scared of it but merely going to go in with eyes-open.

The known shortcomings are easily identified and CA seems to *usually* be receptive to returns.

Anymore, whether it's a hammer or a Mercedes... I expect nothing to be "ready for prime time" as bought.

More's the pity!

Nothing wrong with that ca bulldog for protection, they hit hard.

Myself I keep a 629 laying around for a beater truck gun, it has a 6 1/2" bbl. Had this 4" bbl'd 29 for years & shot the heck out of it.

Sold that 4" bbl'd 29 earlier this year, was offered a stupidly high price for it & down the road it went.

Carried a bulldog since the 80's and still do to this day. They ain't pretty but they flat out work.

Every 2 years or so I work on new loads for the bulldog. This year I was playing around with standard pressure loads using power pistol. Chose a 245gr keith swc hp and a 200gr type III wc. No nra bullseye accuracy but I really wasn't trying for anything like that either. Used the right target and aimed at the bottom of the white inner circle (black bull ='s 3 1/4") and rattled off 5 shots in 10/15 seconds $ 25ft. 10 shots in a 3 /14" circle @ 25ft in 30 seconds max works for me.

You'd be doing your brother 1 heck of a favor by letting him use that bulldog.
