So who's going to convert their AR to 300 Ham'r?

Question for guys more knowledgeable than me. How does the 357AR (Max-Rimless) compare in velocity and energy?

My understanding is it is a straight wall 223 case with 357 pistol bullets.

Hmmm... take an established cartridge and move the shoulder forward and call it Ham'r. Wilson Combat has done with with 458 SOCOM and now 300 BO. I am not terribly impressed with either. This new 300 Ham'r eeks out a slight bit more supersonic performance at the expense of being able to do sub-sonic loads. I will stick 300 BO, 300 Ham'r offers me nothing I want or need.
Wilson also takes out a little more of the case taper.

I don’t have one in an AR but I have a 357 maximum pistol and it’s quite a little thumper. My long throated 13” barrel shoots a 180 grain xtp to 2200 fps. A normally throated 16” barrel shoud do about the same with 22 grains of H110. At short range it will be hands down the most powerful 223 based cartridge. The low ballistic coefficients of the bullets though means it’s loses a lot of energy at 200 yards. It does shoot pretty flat to 150 yards or so. And because it uses revolver bullets they will still be terminally effective out a long way. It’s a fun cartridge, kind of a mini 450 bushmaster.

Starline sells straight wall 223 cases that you can use to make brass without having to neck up.

Color me uninterested. It's basically a 30-30 in a semi-auto rifle. I have a 30-30 and have never used it for anything except fun shooting and not a lot of that. There are better cartridges for the hunting conditions in my area. Why do I have it and keep it? It's very old and was a gift from a friend.

Not even close. My 16” 7.62x39 does 2620 with a 125gr accubond and CFE BLK.
I am really curious what CFE BLK will do in my 7.62x40WT, are you loading full case at 100%? How many grains do you load? This powder does amazing things for my 221 fireball, it's 30% smaller cartridge (21gr vs. 31gr capacity) than 223 but I chronographed my 50gr bullet avg 3348fps with 6fps spread and I got sum moa group. The powder really shines when at 100% or slightly compressed, I wasn't sure it it would be pressure safe for my cartridge but if you're shooting this from 7.62x39 which has greater capacity than a lesser capacity 7.6x40WT should be fine too.

Its full up to the base of the neck. I worked up to 30 grains in Fiochi brass cases which is the max listed load, and I was also loading pulled steel cases which have alot more internal volume. It took 31 grains to get to the same pressure level and velocity as the brass cases. What is the case capacity of the 7.62x40WT? About 25 I would guess? I would think you would be able to run up to a compressed load in that due to the smaller volume and higher pressure rating.

EDIT: The volume on my once fired LC brass is little more than 29 grains. If I didn't have 8lb of 1680 that I picked up at great price (20/lb) I would stock up on CFE BLK! Lucky for me both cartridges in 22 and 30 cal use same powders! I can use 4198, H110, Lil' Gun, 1680, 4227, CFE BLK, Reloader 7 as well as my 300 Blackout. Ok now I am itching to try CFE BLK, when looking at Hodgdon data it always had lowest pressure, I wonder how it's possible at the same time to get fastest velocity.

One thing to consider and everyone with a new cartridge does it. They compare watered down factory ammo velocities to high pressure handloads or in the case of the 300BO they like to say their 300 is as fast as a 30-30 but they compare a 110gr in a 300BO to a 30-30 shooting a 150gr bullet.

A 30-30 with a 150-170 flat nose isn't a great performer, I started hunting with one in the mid 70s. Bullets have changed, they perform better. Load a 30-30 with a 120-130gr new bullet and it's a different animal. We have been shooting the 30 Herrett AR/ 30HRT/ TAC30(6.8 necked up to 30cal and run at 58000psi) since 2007. 130gr bullet at 2600(med load) 16" barrel, 120gr MKZ at 2790 out of an 18" barrel. The terminal performance on game is impressive. A 7mm or 300 mag didn't drop deer or hogs any faster.

Good to hear from you on THR @constructor!
