Make sure you know what your getting into before buying a USP. It's not for everyone. It's a polymer pistol costing hundreds more than other polymers and it comes from a company with quite a reputation for not liking civilians.
i feel recoil on my glock22 way less than my sig229 in .40cal
but if you're looking for one, www.summitgunbroker.com has 229s for a great deal. and if recoil is really an isue you can always get a recoil management system like springco usa. i had it in my 1911 and then my beretta, and now i'm thinking of getting one for my bhp.
I own the following in 40 S&W; Beretta 96, Ruger P94, S&W 4006, M&P 40, H&K USP and a Glock model 20 with 40S&W EFK Fire Dragon ported barrel. As for the softest shooting it is a tossup between the 4006 and the P94 (which in my opinion) is a very under rated gun. For the weight the H&K is really great but kind of bulky for concealed carry. The M&P has a little more recoil than the H&K but is a joy to shoot and more concealable. I like all of them and tomorrow will pick up a Sig P226 in 40 S&W. I got the H&K used for $425 shipped and the Ruger for $175.00 from Pheonix Distributors of Frasterville PA Via Gunbroker. In the past week a 4006 custom sold for $255 and they usually have 10 - 30 guns at auction per week.
Beretta PX4 is the softest shooting 40 cal I have ever felt. I don't even like the 40 cal round personally. But this gun is almost like shooting a 9mm.
My favoret 40 is a CZ 75B in .40. but I sell guns and a woman customer found she like the steyr 40 (she didn't like a .32 auto, .380 cz or Makarov)
I like my CZ champion in 9mm( just a little out of her price range.
But wound up with a Bersa thunder 9mm(full size.)(cheaper than the Steyr)
Pat
I also own a Sig 226ST 40SW which is an all stainless frame & slide. The felt recoil is almost nonexistent & it shoots softer than my Sig 226 Navy 9mm. I have allowed fellow shooters at the local range an opportunity to shoot my Sig stainless & their shocked reaction is always...where's the recoil? My Sig basically reset the owner satisfaction level for a number of Kimber, HK USP, & Springfield XD gun owners.
Similiar to above, the softest shooting .40 was a SIG X5. All stainless 5" P226 with undercut triggerguard. It felt like shooting a downloaded .40 in a G22.
I would say go for a sig P226. Its a heavy gun but extremely accurate out of the box and tames recoil easily. With the 226 its slight differnce between 9mm and 40 imo. Ya their expensive. But you usually get what u pay for and it will last u forever. Just my .02.
The Sig 226 is a pretty good value for a great gun right now if you do some shopping. I just bought a new (not pre owned) 2 tone 226 at www.budsgunshop.com for $599 shipped. The Sig 226 Ceritfied Pre Owned guns can be had for between $530 and $590 at various places. These are guns that have been refinished and refurbished by Sig that come with a one year warranty. There are also a couple at auction on gunbroker (Pheonix Distributors) in decent shape currently in the sub $400 range.
