I noticed that the guys at the local gun shop all wear guns. Well it's the local gun shop / pawn shop. When I look at tv shows I have noticed they also wear guns on their hips. Is this just to be cool or a fear or robbery. Q

Because they can. I carry whenever I can. If I could at work, I would.

Would you not carry?

I think it's smart. A gun store or pawn shop is a prime target for robbery if undefended. Both are filled with highly portable, highly valuable goods that are incredibly easy to sell on the street.

Guns, jewelry, money. It would be stupid NOT to carry when those are your business.

Thanks

The question was the funniest thing I have seen today.

WHY do you think bank guards and armored truck guards carry a gun.

My guess is they are in control of stuff that is likely to be stolen, bet the same is true of gun shops.

btw, when I worked at one we had guns around the whole shop [ hidden of course ] in case we were disarmed.

I agree. It's a deterrent.
Even in my LGS in NY (Long Island, not te city) everyone wears a pistol, and I don't blame them either.

It would be interesting to see statistics on gun store robberies vs. the rate of robberies in other types of store.
I'd be willing to bet that stores where the owner is openly armed get robbed less.

Because money is more valuable to protect than our school children....at least to those people who have no problem with armored trucks being guarded by people with guns but are against people with guns guarding our children at schools and on school buses.

Heck, local gun store I go to has a nice big german shepherd in it as well. I know for a fact the owner bought a legit attack dog and takes it out once a month or more to keep it's training up.

The owner of my favorite gs said he won't carry a gun because he don't want to get shot. I can't see why he thinks this will save him.

30+ years ago, I worked part time in a LGS. Myself and a friend started working there at the same time. We both carried. The owner, a much older gentleman, did not. (don't ask about his barely legal shotgun) One Saturday, a cocky customer piped up with a "What's the matter, expecting a robbery?" comment. He thought he was funny. I looked at him very seriously and said, "Of course not." I then asked him..."Ever been in a shoe store where the salesman was barefoot?" He just stood there with his mouth open looking like the fool he was. "Of course not, I said....so why would you take advice about a handgun from a salesman that didn't carry one?" End of cocky customer. :neener:

Best post I've read in a long time.

Its even funnier when they carry weapons unloaded. Last time I went into this unusual gun store in Hoover I noticed the owner carrying a modified Glock. Took a look at the spare magazines and they were empty. Noticed the same thing on any employee that was carrying a revolver.

I asked about that at my LGS one time, seeing both guys were armed, 1 with a Ruger GP-100, other guy had a 1911.

Guy Behind Counter said "We have 2 of 3 things The Criminal Element always wants".

Me: "What are those 2?"

GBC: "Firearms and money".

Me: "And item # 3?"

GBC: "Drugs."

Every LGS that I frequent in my area has armed employees, no exceptions that I've seen, besides Cabelas gun counter. The owner of the larger store/range told me that it's a store rule to never have more than two employees in the same part of the store to keep them from bunching up. I've watched this in action: if one employee calls another over for some reason, the other 2-3 will spread out away from them. The place is well-known for classes and training, you'd have to have a death wish to cross those folks.

When I took my first Arkansas CHP class, the legal portion of the class was taught by a lawyer who was a former police officer. He told of a pawnshop owner in Hot Springs who has been robbed half a dozen times.

"Each time we'd respond, there would be the robber lying on the floor, the owner behind the counter with his gun cleared, slide locked back, lying on the counter."

In a Pawn/Gun shop I worked at back in the 90's we open carried plus we had a couple 12ga coach guns behind counter. One night about 5 min before closing time a young couple came in, they spit up and was all over the store looking at everything and nothing. At the time my employee was across the shop picking up handguns and jewerly that went into the safe at night and a friend/customer was at the end of counter where I was. The girl came up in front of me and leaned over it, her boyfriend came up behind her and with hands on each side of her leaned on counter. What they didn't know was I saw the pistol in her hip pocket. When he leaned on counter I had my hand on my 45 and safety was off, employee across the shop had his 38 out and friend/customer just pulled his jacket back and had his hand of his 357. The young couple looked all around and left the store. Pawn/Gun shop are a prime target which lead to the death of two Pawn shop oweners south of Birmingham because they didn't carry anything.

In my all-time favorite gun store everyone wore a sidearm. The owner was a former cop and the employees had a diverse background.

One time I was looking over the shelves of random stuff and found an old wind instrument case. I joked to the owner about violin cases. He took the instrument case and opened it on the counter. Out from seemingly nowhere comes this pistol gripped riot shotgun with a 20 inch barrel and eight shot tube. the shotgun fit like a glove then the case was closed.

Over my years of patronage I noticed several loaded firearms where one would not expect them.

On my current LGS at least two of the employees openly carry...One of them had the local cops called on him because he was open carrying outside of work.
