Sorry, we can't ship this to you.

"...Black powder firearms cannot be shipped to...Canada..." That is wrong. Unless it's a BP handgun or replica of a percussion lock long gun(those are treated like any other firearm up here. No idea why a percussion lock isn't consider an antique.), there are no restrictions on our side. The manufacturer must have your Commerce Dept.'s exporter'$ licence(big bucks last I saw. $1800 per annum, as I recall.) too, I think, but flintlock, matchlock and wheel lock long guns have no cross border restrictions.
"...Pretty poor business move either way..." Not if you can sell everything you make or resell without mucking around with unconstitutional State BS. Barrett left CA for that reason.

Illinois considers all blackpowder guns to be firearms. Same goes for any airgun rated 700 fps or more. Therefore must have FOID and new sales have to go through a dealer. Ridiculous, but that's the way it is here.
Airguns over .18 AND over 700 fps per the new law

For those unlucky enough to be living in prohibited states:
Before getting angry with the dealers, think about changing politicians and the laws.

Take it from an avid shooter in CT who lives the next town over from SH. It is incredibly frustrating when they can't ship to us. The biggest kick in the pants is when companies have arbitrary shipping restrictions because they don't understand the law. We have tried everything to oust our idiot government but there are too many people in CT supporting the progressive agenda.

As for black powder, it used to be that you could have percussion rifles, shotguns, and pistols mailed right to your home outside of Chicago. Knew guys that bought the old Hawkins kits that way. However at least for the past number years now have seen the prohibition statewide.

I've run into this ordering ammo and even magazines. There are on line retailers such as CTD and MidwayUSA that have refused to ship to me because I live near, but not in Cook County. Their explanation was that they can't keep track of the changing gun laws in our area, so they decided not to ship anywhere near Cook County. It looks like CTD has softened on that for now, as I was able to order from them recently. As other posters mentioned, I don't like being penalized for living near in or near an area with moronic gun laws, but I can't blame the retailers for who Illinois and specifically Cook County residents vote for.

The FOID verification process takes less than one minute, start to finish, so while it may be considered BS, if not unconstitutional, it is not at all difficult. It is basically required for every face-to-face individual firearm transaction in Illinois. The seller must keep a record of certain elements of the sale for a period of ten years.

As stated above, black powder and even certain air guns are considered 'firearms' by Illinois law and a FOID Card is required for purchase and/or possession. If I were an out of state business owner I probably would not want to bother with trying to keep up with the restrictions on selling to places like Illinois or New Jersey.

The point I'm trying to make is that CTD and other sites WILL ship any other firearm BESIDES black powder to IL.

Cheaper than dirt will sell me a S&W MP22 handgun and have it shipped to an FFL.

Cheaper than dirt WILL NOT sell me a BP long gun, revolver, or handgun.

Despite nothing in IL law saying otherwise.

They are able to run their business any way they choose.

Probably too much confusion/hassle to bother with
IL sales, or they just don't like IL. Their choice I guess.

Call and ask why.

What does a valid state of Illinois issued FOID look like and, most importantly, how would I know a legal one from a illegal one?

As a businessman I won't sell to Illinois either.

Obviously the photo wouldn't be generic geometric shapes, rather a real photo. You can validate a FOID card online through IL state police.

I do like that with running a purchasers FOID card, even in a private sale, the other person is legally able to buy the gun (I'm sure mistakes happen, but it's some assurance).

I may be wrong but at one time I thought Illinois did not consider black powder stuff to be considers as firearms? May have changed in the past few years and I didn't keep up.
I live "down state" and have had cap n ball pistols sent to the front door USPS. Cabela's just needed a photo copy of the FOID card and drivers liscense, no problem. Dixie gun works needed neither, just send the money.
Midway however and some others all stated that according to the Illinois state police, it was unlawful to ship their black powder pistols to Illinois?
I think the grey area has a lot to do with separating Chicago from "down state" Illinois.
Just my opinion.

Wow, even bullets ... how'bout cases, powder and/or primers?
It's not required to buy ANYTHING but ammo or firearms

that said some folks won't sell powder or primers w/o one - heck Dicks wanted my FOID to buy .22 cal pellets
