Sorting brass when I noticed this oddity

Stepped case not unheard of but not common either—has been discussed here in the past. What’s the headstamp?

Not sure as I snapped the pic and then tossed it in the Big Brass Bucket. What hasn't ever been discussed here at some point? 😄

I've only been sorting brass for 5-6 years, so not an old timer, but I've never seen that. Thought it was kinda cool.

Never seen that before and figured I'd ask what would cause a very uniform rim around the interior like that? Just a regular 9mm case...
They are manufactured that way. Not a problem if you aren't seating your bullets pass that point. The most common headstamps for these cases are Ammoland, FM (Freedom Munitions), and IMT (not to be confused with IMI; who makes great brass)

Some shooters who load 9mm Major like them because the head of the case is a bit stronger and they don't have to worry about bullet set back increasing their already high pressures...they also only reload it once

I found some range pickup brass like that during Covid. Picked up quite a few of them, so had to sort a lot of brass to get rid of it. I forget what headstamp it was.

I buy and sell range brass and occasionally will come across them. I just seperated five gallons of range brass Saturday, I wet tumbled the 9mm and found three of them.
I toss them in to the recycle bucket.
Anything odd goes to the recycling center.

The big takeaway here is if you miss that step and load a bullet that fits, you will have less case volume than a regular brass and will cause a dangerous pressure event when shooting this round. To utilize that brass seperate loading data would need to be found.
That's why I toss all of the stepped 9mm cases.

I had one separate at the ledge, mid range load, unknown history on the brass.
Lucky it wasn't in the a match or something more important. Front half of the case was left in the barrel, gun was unfireable until it was removed.
Now I toss any I find in the recycle can.
I have plenty of 9mm brass, not worth messing with those IMO.

I've found plenty of those, as someone pointed out there from MAX-TECH. It's cheap range ammo (IMO) I think it's used to lower case volume to raise pressure and lower powder cost. Like I said IMO. definitely toss it. Also I've shot plenty Freedom Munitions and never seen this. I shoot lots of there ammo and it's always been good.

Add OZK and some Aguila to the list of stepped cases I've encountered. I've only encountered the Aguila once a few years ago, and it had a pronounced cannelure on the outside of the case as well. Scrap bucket for me too. I thought they were a thing of the past, then I split a case just recently seating a deep 147. Pulldown revealed the telltale ring.

Not as common as they once were. The problem for reloaders is that they will crack right at the step about the 3rd reload. Sometimes this leaves the case mouth inside the gun's chamber, thus blocking the next cartridge.

Not a fun occurrence, and not much fun trying the get the ring out of the chamber at the range.
