k-frame or sp101. k-frame will be a bit harder to conceal but will hold an extra round. sp101 will be tougher. take your pick.
Ruger SP-101 is much more economical to purchase than any of the Smith & Wessons.
Also Ruger has a great warranty.

Does anyone on here have both models of the SP-101 in .357 in 2.5 inch barrel and 3 inch barrel? Can you tell what the differences are?

trying to bring back the thread. i am picking up my sp101 tomorrow. spurless hammer 2.25 barrel.. lets see some more pictures.. i am changing the grips right away and maybee add a night sight. i really like seeing the custom touches you guys do to these little hot rods.

Hey Pennsylvania motorcycle guy, I'm picking up my SP101 2.25 tomorrow also. I won't be changing anything for about a week but I have a set of Trausch grips coming, Hiviz green fiber optic sight and I will be doing a "melt" job to it to get rid of any sharp edges. I'll post some before and afters of it,maybe you can do the same.

Weigand Custom SP101 .357

Got it at my local Gander Mountain for $500. When I saw that price I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough.

If those are those black standard grips that come on gun I don't blame you for getting rid of them immediately. They are plain ugly. A Crimson Tracer Laser grip would look alot better and be an improvement for this fixed sight snubby.

Don't be afraid of the 2 1/4

Hey guys, I just got back from the range... couldn't be happier with my sp101 2 1/4. I was a little worried about accuracy with the shorter barrel, but that's not a problem.. If you're considering a 2 1/4 vs 3" I would go with the 2 1/4. It's a little easier to carry and I'm very happy with accuracy. Also Jim Badger makes some wonderful grips...

You may find that those laser sights may help more than what little sight is currently on SP-101.

picked it up today

got my sp101 today. what a tough looking cannon. the stock grips fit my hand perfectly and actually look better in person than in any photos. hope to shoot it tomorrow. its all stock but really feels great..balance, weight and size. here is a cell phone picture.. i realize it looks like any other 2.25 spurless model but its mine and i am pretty excited about it. what do you guys use for .357 carry ammo?

Charlie I like the bobbed hammer. I have no pics yet but the same gun, I use Speer 125gr GDHP and an extra speed loader of Federal 129 +P 38 or CorBon 110+P

yeh, bobbed hammers really look slick and function well. i am trying to find Speer Gold Dot 135gr .357 Mag. Short Barrel loads but everyone is out of them and MidWay USA says 8 months backordered. i carry the Short Barrel 135gr +P.38 special in my J-frame and really like the way they shoot. if anyone knows where they are available, let me know. i can find 125gr and 158 standards but no Short Barrel.

I LOOKED AT A .38 LCR RUGER YESTERDAY A 5 SHOT CONCEAL CARRY 5 SHOT SNUB. THE TRIGGER PULL ON IT IS DA ONLY BUT IT FEELS ALOT BETTER THAN THE SP-101 IN SAME MODE. I WAS SURPRISED HOW SMOOTH AND LIGHT & FAST THE TRIGGIER PULL IS ON THESE LITTLE LIGHT GUNS.
THE THING IS THOUGH I PREFER A .357 MODEL BECAUSE YOU CAN USE THE SAME .38 AMMO OR +p'S AS THOSE GUNS IN ADDITION TO THE MORE POWERFUL .357. BEING A .38 THOUGH THEY ARE ALOT MORE COMPACT AND EASIER TO CARRY THAN THE .357.
I WAS STILL AMAZED ON HOW GOOD THAT TRIGGER PULL WAS ON RUGER LCR .38. IT ALSO COMES WITH CRIMSON TRACER GRIPS FROM FACTORY.:D

A 38 and 357 model of the same gun are the same size, one is no more compact than the other. Even the cylinder is the same outer dimensions.

If this is the case then I don't see the reason to go with the LCR .38 because the LCR .357 can shoot the same ammo and also the more powerful .357.

I agree but, If you have ever shot 357 mag out of a small gun you know what that's all about...RECOIL,now bring that to a 17 oz. gun and it makes you think about those 38 +P's

Yes I know what you mean. So in otherwards it will be no fun shooting the LCR .357 because it will be painful.
Just like those very light S & W Scandia models snubbies made out of titanium that are ultra light (Very expensive $$) but a pain to shoot like it feels like something blew up in your hand.

Then again when you shoot the +P 38 loads in the LCR 357, those 4 extra ounces will probably help the recoil better than the .38 LCR.

You still have the option to load .357 for personal protection.

If a person had to use the LCR .357 for protection they would never notice the difference because of the adrenalin rush and stress.

Very true, those Scandium models suck to shoot anything out of and they are $$$. I have no frame of reference with the LCR but out of my S&W 442 Speer GDHP 135 +P loads were not that bad, I wouldn't want to shoot them all day but I could easily stand 50-100. I think you're right though about the LCR357 and the extra 4oz helping with recoil, but the only thing I would say about 357 for SD is if you don't regularly shoot to practice with them you shouldn't carry them. Also 357 out of a light gun like that you may only get 1 accurate shot, when a follow up shot may be needed it could be too much. With adrenalin rush and stress I wouldn't want another factor into me missing a shot or loosing my life, but that's neither here or there.
I like the 357 for SD but I carry it in my SP101 and love it so far.
