Here's my SP101, .357 magnum. I haven't taken it to the range yet (got it yesterday), but I made this holster for it :) The reason the holster looks tilted is because I can attach it to the shoulder rig I made a few weeks ago and still draw quickly :)
I also have the rubber Hogue grips, but I think the Ruger grips look nicer. I'm thinking about making leather inserts for it if I'll decide not to switch to the Hogue grips.

I can't wait to try it out, it's my first non-.22 firearm!

Do you by chance have a S & W model 617 .22 LR revolver with 10 shots and 6 inch barrel? If so do you like it?

I'm sorry Stinger327, but no, I don't have an S&W. Just a Heritage SA .22 and a Henry lever action. I'm just starting out ;-) Seems like a good looking quality gun though, and at Bud's it's getting a lot of excellent reviews. Good luck deciding!

Buds? Do you have the website address as I would love to read the ratings on this gun. I saw it in person for $750 (for that price I could get a real gun like a .357) and it is just a .22 LR but it is very well made and it's a full size gun.

You will enjoy it. They're probably one of the most fun revolvers to shoot. Be sure to try .357 out of it too.

They ask a lot less than $750 for the S&W 617, but in my opinion it's still quite a lot for a .22. If I had around $700 to spend, I'd try to get a .44 magnum (yes, I'm jumping ahead, still not having fired my .357, but the first caliber I ever heard of as a kid was .44 magnum, and I still have never even touched one - blessed be the day that I will! :) )

Thanks Harmon! I can't wait to take it to the range. Hopefully early next week.

Only one I ever had, an early .22. Liked it, never loved it. Just about doubled my money when I sold it, though.

Thanks for the info on this website.:)
I agree I believe I saw a price of $660 on the 617. But then there is transfer fee. With this in mind do you end up still paying less than $750 purchasing a firearm this way?

I would opt. for a S & W Mod 629 at these prices but of course two completely different type of calibers and guns. The .22 LR is fun and cheaper to shoot but isn't the best choice for personal protection. The mighty .44 magnum is great for personal protection expensive to shoot with alot more recoil-not as fun.

The ammo prices look very reasonable especially the Corbon when compared to Cabela's. But those are cash discounted prices only and to find out credit card price you have to go through the whole process of ordering and entering your credit card number. Prices are all the same with all different methods of payment with Cabela's no matter which method of payment you choose.

They made the .22 from 1993-2003. The earlier production had the half lug barrel like mine, then they started making them with a full length underlug. I bought that one used about the time they stopped making them and sold it a few years later, for a very nice profit.

I have been considering an "ultimate carry revolver" project. Requirements are that it be made by either S&W or Ruger, have a 3-inch barrel, and be chambered in .357 magnum. Haven't decided on the model yet, but the SP101 very well may be it.

If I was going to get a .22 LR today I would get that S & W Mod. 617 10 shot 6inch revolver. Problem is it costs as much if not more than some of the big gun calibers in revolvers.

k-frame or sp101. k-frame will be a bit harder to conceal but will hold an extra round. sp101 will be tougher. take your pick.

I did get the Mod. 617 and got it for $675. Most if not all places around here were asking $750. All of the Smith & Wesson revolvers were expensive.
The 617 is a very well made gun and it will be very economical to shoot all the time. It may not be the best personal protection gun and I know I could have gone for a (Real Gun-larger caliber like a .44 mag or .357 Mag) larger caliber gun but I want this as my fun gun that will go along with my Browning buckmark. I already have 2 .357 revolvers , 9mm auto and .45 ACP as far as handguns go. The next one will be a .357 Ruger SP-101 with Crimson laser grips because this gun feels so good in my hands.
I have seen lots of conceal carry .38 5 shot revolvers on the market but I prefer the .357 caliber as I can also shoot .38 loads from it. I just can't see a reason to get a .38 when there is a .357 available that is put together stronger.
