Just introduced mine to its big brother and plan on taking them out tomorrow. It'll be my first time shooting the 629 (and a .44 Magnum), but definitely won't be the last.

That S & W Mod. 29 is a very accurate gun. What do they go for nowadays-used of course as they are no longer made unless they have a newer version a Mod. 629?

That's a 6" M629 I just picked up on Friday. I got it from Bud's Police Supply for $681 shipped.
Are these guns then still being made brand new or are they used only?
If no longer produced do they have a counterpart replacement new model?
I shot the 8/34 gun and never shot ones of these before and put the first shot in the bullseye.

The M629 is in production: http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/...57770_757767_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y and mine was manufactured on 3 May 2010. The price I paid is a discount available to certain people (police, military, security, etc) and the regular Bud's price is about $100 more. I paid $500 for my SP101 local and could have got it for less if I would have looked online. I'm pretty new to the gun buying thing and learning how to get the best value.

Over $1,000 wow :what:these have gone up in price. In that price range can't you get a .50 cal revolver?
I also like for fun to shoot the Mod. 617 but that is $917. These are very expensive. Or is it that S & W is just an expensive brand now?:uhoh:

I got a SP-101 in grey finish a limited edition with the wood inserts at 400 something:). i'm wondering if these are still available for sale? Or Where? I couldn't find any. I like this one so much I wouldn't mind getting another one.

Since the thread is still going may as well join in and keep it alive.

Moon clip modification, rounded trigger and action job by Clark Custom Guns. Hogue mono grip fits my hand and the wood doesn't snag like rubber.

Not the greatest quality pics, but all I have at the moment.

These are of a different version with no exposed hammer. DAO only.

so how do wood grips compare to something like a Hogue Monogrip as far as the recoil? I would think they would be less forgiving, but ya never know.
First day shooting a .44 Magnum was interesting.. that thing is LOUD and very powerful. Not as much recoil as I thought there would be, but you definitely knew you weren't shooting a .22 :D I would absolutely hate to be on the receiving end of it.

The wood inserts on the SP-101 are fine for shooting. For me it's a cosmetic thing and I like the grey finish better. I do notice a big difference when using the Buffalo Bore .357 125 grain ammo RECOIL.

For me the wood monogrip is fine. Maybe not as cushy as the rubber one (i have one of those too) but better than the stock grip. It's bigger than the stock grip and fills up my hand better which helps with recoil.

Is the SP-101 still available with wood insert grips in gray finish? Or do you have to buy the grips separately now?
Mine came with them and was a Lipsey limited edition.

got new grip inserts from Jim. thanks man. they look and feel great!! highly recommend it!
