SP101, tightening grip screw effects trigger pull

I have an SP101 that I've been using a Hogue Monogrip on. Recently I went back to the stock grip for a slightly more compact package.

What I noticed is that as I tighten the stock grip screw, the trigger pull gets heavier and heavier to the point that I can make it so the trigger barely pulls and if I cock the pistol partially, the hammer can be made to not totally fall.

It doesn't even take a real tightening to start to effect the pull. Once it's snug enough to keep the grip from shifting around, a very noticeable "hitch" shows up in the trigger pull right as the cylinder stops turning and at the same place on reset.

In the meantime I'm going back to the monogrip, but I need the ability to use the stock grips if I so choose.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like the grips are pulling in and impinging on the hammer spring. Remove the grips and look for markings on them that might be from the spring. Replacing the grips or trimming them a bit on the inside might fix your problem.

Only thing i could think of is the grips grabbing the main spring, but that's a helluva distance for it to squeeze. Plus looking on the inside of the stock grips might be a little, well, interesting. It is a one piece grip and all. I'll give it a shot and see if i see anything.

Step one is to contact Hogue.
There may be a factory defect of the grips.

Hogue will either replace them for you, or tell you what to do to prevent this.
Depending on how tight a grip screw is to determine how reliable a gun is, is not a good idea on a defense gun.

If yours is like my GP100 the main spring assembly can be put in backwards. If you've disassembled the gun, you might have put the assembly in wrong.

Did you remember to put the grip captive back in?
The grip captive is the little round aluminum rod that goes through the grip, and the hole in the bottom of the grip stud. The grip captive is what holds the grip on. The inserts only hold the grip captive in place, so the insert screw only has to be tight enough to hold the inserts on.

dfaris- this is with the stock grip, not the hogue
woodsoup-I'll check on that
mark-yes, the aluminum plug is in there

I got a light and shined it down in the grip after getting it tight and cycling a couple of times, there is a set of rub marks where it's pinching the mainspring.

Past that I've noticed if I force the grip forward to eliminate the gap between the grip and the area of the frame immediately behind the hammer prior to tightening, the situation gets worse.

Missed that.
In this case, your contact should be to Ruger.
Obviously something is wrong, either in the grip or the gun itself and needs to be fixed.
Fortunately, Ruger has a great reputation for customer service.
