Not necessary for my wife to ask. It is all of the time. She will, however, hip hug or tap me to check the location as it varies with different clothing. Then, she will walk on the correct side of me based on her survey (strong side carry, she walks on the left side - shoulder rig, right side so I don't sweep her coming out with it. I love her for that. She knows not to hold my right hand and let me sit facing the door.

ArfinGreebly's post reminds me of my wife and me. We don't have pre-defined phrases that we use, but we do speak indirectly about things like Arfin described. Context is a huge part of it, and we are generally very nonliteral in our conversations. We do talk to each other A LOT, including about defensive scenarios, so we have a strong base of understanding to begin with when something of interest comes up.

We do have a lot of "inside references" to things for when we need to be more direct, yet still discrete. One of us might quote a line from a movie, for example, that rerfers to something at hand. Like "Probably some local fisherman, out for a pleasure cruise, at night... in... eel-infested waters" might mean that someone appears to be following us.

After a similar thread here on THR a while back, I decided to do the same when I hooked up with my fiancee. I thought that I'd use something related to "Charlie Foxtrot" as in "Looks like Charlie's coming to visit." Or maybe something like, "I see Charlie was here."

I like the indirect method described by Arfin and Trope, but I felt something more concrete was needed especially over the phone when body language cues aren't apparent.

My fiancee listened to my idea (as outlined above) and said to me that she's very sensitive to other peoples' vibes -- and I know this to be true -- and that she didn't need a code to figure out when something's wrong.

I said, "Baby, I know you're sensitive to this sorta thing. The code's not for you -- it's for me. I'm counting on the fact that if I miss something, you'll catch it. And if Death himself walked in the door and I somehow don't get it, I just don't think 'etgay ouryay ungay' is gonna cut it." :D
