I guess speed strips deteriorate over time.

How long have you had that strip? From what I've seen of thoe, I'd expect them to last a couple/few years in my pocket before replacement.

That is probably bought 3-4 years ago (new), but who could say its actual age. It certainly hasn't been carried a lot, but it has been loaded the whole time...brass cases. No sunlight exposure or any extreme environment.
 
It is almost always the tab that develops a crack...but I'd say after a couple of years, you would have gotten your money's worth.

If you get a 6-shot strip and grip it at the empty slot, it will be less likely to develop a crack
