Picked up some Speer .45 acp and .40 S&W casings at local Law Enforcement Range yesterday with unusual finish. At first thought they were aluminum, but too heavy and a little brighter, almost like a matte finished nickel, not steel, checked them with a magnet. Looked on Speer's website, to no avail....does anybody know anything about this?

They're not just nickel plated brass?
That's what most of my Gold Dots come loaded in, and the Speer GD is a pretty popular round among LE.

I didn't know Speer had a finish like that but I bet the primers are crimped.

I have some like that. Speer 45ACP 200 gr Gold Dots. IIRC, I thought they were aluminum, at the time. I never really gave it much thought. I haven't touched the box since before I started reloading. Now that I look at 'em again, I think they are just nickel plated. Definitely a different look than the 9mm Speer Gold Dots I've shot.

Just rub the mouth on sone fine emery paper, the plating will come off and you can see the base material. Saves a case too.
