I have 2 boxes of 9mm Speer GDHP 124gr bullets and I ONLY have W231. Do not have any other powder.

None of my Lyman manuals or the Online load data shows anything I can use.

Can anyone share what the SPEER reload manual states for starting and max load using 124gr GDHP with W231.

My concern is the COL, I have loaded other JHP but it has all been target plinking ammo. I currently seat my bullets at 1.100 OAL.

Anything would be appreciated. :D

Im sure someone will chime in before I can, but when I get home from work I'll check my Speer manual and let you know, if nobody has answered by then. Good problem to have -231 and GDHPs-

Looks like my fellow THRians are slow on the draw after all today..

Assuming we are talking 9mm Luger here, my Speer14 shows they tested at a COL of 1.12"...4.0 start gr - 4.5 max...124 gr gdhp

Im no expert but I wouldnt be to worried to use your usual COL if I were you, provided I worked up from the start of course.

My Speer 12 (compliments of ReloadRon back when I started) has the same data...

Sorry, I just got my cup of coffee.

According to Speer:

Firearm tested in was a S&W 5906
4" barrel

124 gr. GDHP @ 1.120".

Powder- 231 - 4.0 - 4.5 grs. = velocity of 887 - 998 fps.

Primer - CCI-500

I often load GDHP's for the 9mm and a few other handgun cartridges, but I don't work with the faster burning powders. It's difficult to obtain velocities that will get more than 1000 fps with fast powders and still maintain safe operating pressures. With this said, if you can find a slower burning powder, Longshot, Blue Dot, AA7, Power Pistol, HS6 and the like, you'll achieve better self defense velocities with less effort, or without having to push the pressure envelope to it's limits.

Hope this helps.

I'm seeing 6.3 grs. max charge for SR4756 and 124 gr. FMJ as published by IMR. 6.3 grs. is published as a compressed charge, so it seems to be a pretty friendly powder in this respect, certainly no chance of double charges at least. So probably drop that back about .5 grs. and work back up until it's cycling your firearm reliably, and you should be fine.

I worked with 4756 years ago, well more like 25 or so years, didn't have any problems with it. I think 4756 may have been reformulated since those days though, hopefully RC will jump in with his expertise?

Gamestalker and potatohead, that is great info.

I will start at 4.0 and test a few. For proper feeding I need to set my OAL at 1.100, that is only 0.020 less than shown. I am desperately looking for other powder, but there is none to be had down here in the Southeast. I am looking for WSF or CFE Pistol.

Just be careful with that oal, 9mm is quite oal sensitive regarding pressures. If your going to decrease the oal by .020", I would most definitely start at the minimum charge and work up from there. There is nothing wrong with setaing to the oal that best suits your firearm, but usually it's best to seat to the longest oal that will accomplish such with 9mm, and other high pressure AL handgun cartridges.

BTW, .020" can have a significant effect on pressures in my experience. Speer warns of this, having deliberately seated .030" deeper they had a 28,000 cup tested load jump to 62,000 cup.

What part of Alabama are you in? I'd like to tell you that up here in Huntsvegas you could find some pistol powder but if I did I'd be lying:)

We can bury you from head to toe with rifle powder though.

Range Update

Went to the range today and was able to test my reloads.:D

124gr GDHP, OAL 1.120, Longshot

124gr Xtreme HP, OAL mixed, W231

CPX2 9mm
STAR 30m 9MM

Data attached. It was a hot an Humid day. I am still debating if I need to increase the load on the GDHP using 5.4gr Longshot. Any comments?

The 124 Speer GDHP (not +P) is listed around 1165 on the Speer site.
Find data for a 124/5 HP and Win 231/HP-38 and look for that speed rating in the data.
Work up. Use a chrono. If no chrono be cautious.

I use n340.

Lefty,
In you OP you said you had no other powder than W231. How did you test Longshot?

You also said the online data did show W231 but the Hodgdon site has plenty of data for W231/HP-38 for all bullet weights including 124gr and 125gr bullets.

The loads you made with 5.4gr of Longshot look good. My son's favorite 9mm ammo is made with a 124gr bullet and Longshot but I'm using a higher charge weight. (5.7gr Longshot) Accuracy is excellent with Longshot. I use a lot of W231 for range ammo especially with 124gr lead bullets. (between 4.0gr & 4.4gr W231)

All the data above can be verified on the Hodgdon Load Data Site and you should always verify any load data you get from an Internet forum.

ArchangelCd i got lucky and came across #1 of Longshot and decided to load with it. I have not loaded any GDHP with W231. sorry for the confusion on the initial post. Sometimes my mind runs faster than i can type. I am on the lines of what you described and use myW231 for plinking and target practice and use the Longshot for my SD.

I did noticed that accuracy improved with increase of charge weight for Longshot. I only got to 5.4gr. I hope to load 5.5 up to 5.7 and test. I have heard from many that Longshot needs to be loaded on the upper end for best accuracy.

I only use Xtreme 124gr HP for my target/plinking ammo. ( I have tried others, Berry's, MG) but i like the Xtreme the best.

thanks for all the input.
