I have data and produced loads for:

124gr MG FMJ with W231, 124gr Xtreme HP with W231 and Longshot, 124gr GDHP with Longshot.

I have come into 6 pounds of Power Pistol:what:

I have the Alliant site date:

1.12 4 CCI 500 Power Pistol 6.4 1,157

I would like to know if anyone can share their 124gr Xtreme HP data. Just interested to see who is using what. I am looking to make minor for plinking and working up for SD loads if Power Pistol is good for that. I will use the GDHP for any SD, but I have 3k of 124gr Xtreme HP for target and I am looking to fill those.:D

thanks,

Lefty

I've worked up loads using Berrys and Rainier Plated Round nose, and used the same load with Xtreme PRN, no hollow points (to cheap to pay the extra $6).
Anyhow, the max I've shot is 5.7gr Power Pistol, 1.140", CCI SP primer. It gave 1,086 FPS from my Glock 19.
5.7gr was max in both Hornady and Lyman, and the 2013 Alliant load guide didn't list a 124gr bullet with Power Pistol, so I have not worked up any higher. I would speculate that I could go a bit higher but I would work up to that 6.4gr in 0.2gr increments. Power pistol is so loud and flashy, I don't use it much anymore.
Not sure if I would go to max.
The 5.7gr load would easily make minor and my notes say it was accurate. Be careful substituting in a Xtreme bullet for a GDHP and then loading to max.

I used 5.0 gr of Power Pistol for 124 precision delta JHP. It cycled my XDm, so it should make minor. 6.4 seems kind of hot.

More importantly, where did you find the power pistol?

I load with Power Pistol, Bayou Bullets, 124gr, 5.2gr, 1.130", avg about 1080fps for my general range stuff. Also Precision Delta 124gr JHP, 1.100", 5.3gr average 1079fps, nearly identical. I've loaded the Precision Delta @ 6.1gr, average 1164fps. I keep a bunch of these stashed for SHTF, the Precision Deltas aren't great expanded rounds but they DO expand.

I found the powder at the Express Pawn shop in Columbus GA. They seem to be getting a lot of powder in lately, the only place I can find and I live in southeast Alabama a two hour drive for me.

I don't think they are made for expansion. Competition shooters will use HP because they have a longer bearing surface which is supposed to make them more accurate.

Although I haven't seen Power Pistol locally yet, there seems to be a bit more of it for sale on the Internet. I also saw an email from Alliant posted in a forum where they said they've been fulfilling orders to ammo manufacturers and will be having their powder available to us mid to late summer. Your statement seems to corroborate that.

Personally, once powder is available I'm going to find powder I like from two other manufacturers in case there's another shortage. That and keep a two year supply of components.;)

Can you load Power Pistol down? Or is it one of those that likes it hot?
I was able to load it just over the amount I needed to cycle my slide and didn't have any problems with accuracy.

I'm using Xtreme 124 gr RN loaded with 5.7 grains of power pistol. Shoots well in my Shield and G19. Loud with mild to moderate recoil.

BTW, PP has a very pronounced muzzle flash which may be a drawback for SD loads.

My go to powders for SD loads in 9x19 are:
VV3N37 w/ 124gr XTP
VVn340 w/ 124gr XTP
Unique w/ 124gr XTP
VV3N38 w/147gr GDHP This one needs bbls >4'' in length.

Thanks GJ. Darn it, I shouldve bought some then, the other day when I had a chance. I figured it was "for top end only" since it gets top velocity in some manuals in 9mm.

Dont know why I made the correlation that good at going fast meant bad at going slow.

That's encouraging. I bet people will buy it up like piranha on cattle. (thats all I could come up with)

And I have seen it online a bit Here in the last week or so it was in stock at Recobs for a whopping 2 hrs :what:

Power Pistol is the only pistol powder I've seen for sale in about a year. I use it for about everything in pistol and revolver. I used to load 9mm with it but the flash is pretty obnoxious in short barreled handguns.

It's another one of those powders that will work for just about any pistol or revolver caliber in the heat range around Unique. It took Unique's place as my #1 do all powder about 2 years ago.

Yea, I was hesitant when I purchased the six pounds, but with not knowing what will be available I made the decision to get it all. I am still on the look out for CFE Pistol or something else that I can use as SD powder.:D

I have read all of the posts about PP being flashy, I guess it will replace W231 as my range powder for now. I still have most of the one pound of LongShot left to use.

I use 3.6 grs of Titegroup with the Xtreme 124 HP and really like it. Shoots good in all my Glocks, although my wife initially had stovepipes in her Gen4 19 because of limpwristing but has figured that out.

i went in yesterday looking of powder that i can use for 300 blackout but found four 1lb of power pistol and a 4lb jug. i bought the 4lb jug. very interesting because i'm going to use it for the same 124 gr xtreme bullet.

Power Pistol Range Update

Finally loaded up and went to the range testing my new Power Pistol Loads.:what:

I shot in the daytime so could not compare any flash results. I may of noticed a slight increase in "bang" compared to W231 but with hearing protection on, could not really tell a difference.

data is from:

STAR 30M 9mm handgun (3.5in barrel). 73 and Sunny. All rounds were 124gr Xtreme HP, WSP and Speer brass.

Powder: Load: OAL: #shots/ Avg Vel SD ES
Power Pistol 5 1.12 10 / 1029 20 63
Power Pistol 5.1 1.12 10 / 1031 25 63
Power Pistol 5.2 1.12 10 / 1053 27 68
Power Pistol 5.3 1.12 10 / 1077 13 49
Power Pistol 5.4 1.12 10 / 1093 11 33

The days Low velocity was 995fps and the Hi 1114fps. Out of 50 rounds.

The best accuracy noted was using 5.4gr PP, but accuracy was not tested at this point, only noticed, I still need to go out and load 5.5,5.6,5.7 and test.

Its not bad, but if I can find some CFE Pistol, AUTO Comp, or WSF I may have 5# of PP for sale.

Power Pistol runs best at the upper end of the data range. Your results will likely improve as you work up your loads. Power Pistol is one of the best powders for 9mm and is one of the two most highly recommended for it by Hornady (the other being AA#7.) Power Pistol doesn't seem that loud or flashy to me but then I got my start handloading 357 Magnum using H110 for a 4" GP100. Loud and flashy is all relative.

currently loaded xtreme plated 124gr RN at 5.4 gr of Power pistol. very similar

Update: Range data on the rest of the run.

Bullet: Powder: Load: OAL: #shots/ Avg Vel SD ES

124 Xtreme HP Power Pistol 5.5 1.12 10 / 1110 16 58

124 Xtreme HP Power Pistol 5.6 1.12 10 / 1116 20 68

124 Xtreme HP Power Pistol 5.7 1.12 10 / 1137 13 44

124 SPEER GDHP LongShot 5.6 1.12 5 / 1085 21 55

Same handgun, 91 and sunny weather. The 5.6 PP load showed best accuracy.

Want to try to test the SPEER GDHP with PP when i get a chance.

The 5.6gr of PP load provides the best accuracy so far.

This is a good thread. I've been working on 124gr bullet 9mm loads with Power Pistol and was wondering what powder charges people have settled on. I really like Power Pistol in 9mm. .40 and 10mm. I even use it in mid .357 mag loads. It can put out quite a flash but isn't noticeable during the daytime. Accuracy is excellent. I, too, have found Power Pistol lately and bought 4lbs. Good thing because I was almost out! Seems like BE-86 would be ideal.

I just came into 4 lb of BE-86. That's what you need to be on the look out for.
It has all the high energy of Power Pistol without that obnoxious flash. It is very stable and seems to work as well with low pressure loads as it does with high pressure loads.

I need to get to my LGS, I saw CFE something in the pistol powder section and didn't pay attention to it because I didn't know what it was.
If there was any there it's gone now.

You didn't go wrong with the Power Pistol but BE-86 will ultimately replace it and Unique in my opinion. Same burn rate as Unique, superb metering, clean, and all the energy of Power Pistol. What's not to like? (except for copper removing qualities)
I have 6lbs of Power Pistol also that now, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with, since I started using BE-86.

I use Power Pistol behind Sierra 125 grn RN & JHP, Hornaday HAP 125's also. I get excellent accuracy in the 5.3 and 5.4 grn area as well as out close to max loads. Good stuff!

I still have 5 pounds of PP left, but i will be on the look out for BE-86 and i would like to find some CFE Pistol and compare all three. Sounds like the BE-86 will be the replacment of PP especially if it has the flash suppresent.

Sounds like the BE-86 will be the replacement of PP especially if it has the flash suppressant

According to Quickload, Power Pistol only burns 79% of the powder with my load. I've always thought that unburned powder burning at the end of the muzzle is what causes a flash. So is there really a suppressant or is it that BE-86 just burns more completely?

I shot loads of 5.6, 5.8 and 6.0gr of Power Pistol with 124gr FMJ RN bullets at 1.140" OAL (Win primers, FC brass) this afternoon. All were accurate and reliable in my CZ 75 B and Glock 34. Recoil at 6.0 PP was noticeably more pronounced than at 5.6 and 5.8 No signs of excessive pressure. Temp was unusually cool at 70 degrees this afternoon. I don't have a chronograph right now.
