SPOTTING SCOPES

If you want to see .22 holes at 100 yards you will be spending over $500. Kowa is a brand you'll see at high power matches. They are well worth the money.

Something to look into, and I am in no way familiar with, would be a long range remote camera set-up. Caldwell offers one such camera for $350 (street price) that can be connected to your smartphone.

Having gone the cheap spotter route several times myself, there’s not a one I would recommend under the $350 threshold before adding another $100+ for a tripod. Something to kick around.

I really like my bass pro Pursuit spotting scope, about $150 to $175.

Are we talking about something different than this as it's listed at only $69.97 If that would do the job for me I'd be really happy with that price.

Is there anybody with a spotting scope that shoots at a white paper target at 200 yards and see's there hits using 223 caliper cartridge?

Not a spotting scope but I can see .223 holes in white paper plates at 200 yds with my Bushnell Nitro 6-24x50 rifle scope. I want to be able to see them at 300 yds though and that's a problem.

Problem is, the bullseye is black and picking bullet holes out of the black is a lot harder.

I get around that by using a white paper plate with one of those splatterburst type dots as the bullseye. You can buy 720 of those dots for $8. As you can see I'm not exactly tearing up the bullseye at that range anyways.

Unless that yardage is a misprint I'll have to disagree. My eyes are far from great and I can see .22 holes at 100 yds on white paper plates easily with my $300 scope and can make them out, though not as easily with my $100 scope at that distance.

I kind of looked at that remote camera setup a bit, but from what I read the ones in the price range you're talking about are pretty much maxed out for range at 300 yds which is what I wanted. Ones with much better range were more like $1k and that was out of the question. Another thing that scared me a bit was that I've never been able to get my Caldwell chronograph to work with either my phone or my tablet. It works well and I can see the display from the bench so I just write down the readings, but I'd hate to buy the remote camera and not be able to get it to link up. The problem is probably that both my phone and tablet are older and I don't intend to buy new ones.

I brought this thread back to life because I'm currently in the market for a spotting scope that will enable me to see .223 holes at 300 yds and not break the bank.

Quick update. I saw that scope online for $69.97 and thought that sounded like a great price. There are no Bass Pro stores near me so I'd need it shipped. Shipping is $40 which is a deal breaker I think.

For $119.95 I can buy an Athlon Talos with free shipping and I've read comments from several members here who liked that one.

I haven't made up my mind yet. Still seeking input.

In glass, you get what you pay for. Pay once, cry once. Most stores will let you site on distance objects. Take a shot target in, and see what you see.

Consider the secondary market. I bought out of the Cabellas “black hole”....returns and the like. Consider B&H Photo’s used department (good people and a great return policy - make sure to read it). Spend more than you plan to.

To the OP Marine one
Midway has a Tasco FC 20-60x60 spoting scope on sale right now , for $79.99, with free shipping for anything over $49.00.

I'm considering two scopes for 100yard .22/.223 bench rest shooting. Athlon Talos 20x60x80 or the Celestron LandScout 20-60x80mm . Does anyone have experience with either? Price is about the same at $125/$130. Thanks

Maybe the Talos is a better scope now. I bought one in 2019 and it would never focus sharply. I returned it. I use a Leupold 15x45 and 22 holes at 100 yards are easy to see. At 200 yards on a black bull without bright, direct, sunlight they are difficult to impossible and when the mirage start running it's no use to even try.

I just use my daughters cheap telescope. It works great for distances past 200yds, under 200 it is hard to get a clear focus.
