Hi Guys:
I just purchased a brand new Springfield Armory Trophy Match Stainless Steel in 45ACP. My first impressions of this automatic pistol are quite positive.

The fit and finish of the pistol are top notch. The slide action is very tight and fairly hard to cycle as were my Less Baer and Wilson Combat 45's when they were brand new. The stainless steel polish and matt areas are quite pleasing to the eye.

At the range this week, after 200 rounds have been put through the pistol, all functions work quite well. The fully adjustable rear sight was dead on from a left or right aspect. Using my typical 6 oclock hold and my handloaded rounds (200 grain Hensley & Gibbs SWC with bevel base with 3.9 grains of Clays and WW primers and WIN cases) the result was very impressive. Just a few clicks up brought the groups into the center of my targets at 15 yards.

I have kept the two supplied magazines aside and am using Wilson magazines for shooting and they work perfectly.

The unique aspect of this particular 1911 is the take down and stripping procedure which is fairly complex. One must use an Allen wrench (supplied by Springfield Armory) to remove the spring rod (it is two piece). Then the spring and spring keeper are removed (do NOT have the pistol aimed at your head or eyes during this process!) The barrel guide is notched locked, and must be spun to allow its removal and after this the barrel can be slid out forward thru the front of the slide.

The internal machining and fit and finish are very excellent. The trigger feel and break are also excellent and in my opinion do not need any adjustment. The release point of the trigger is very repeatable and provided great feel without any creep. In fact it is close to my S&W Model 52-2 in overall feel so I would rank that as excellent right out of the box!

After 200 rounds there was some lead smearing or sheering right in front of the chamber which was easily removed with a soak of Kroil and some brass brushing. I suspect that once the barrel "breaks in" the lead fouling will dimish but time will tell.

So was it accurate? Indeed this pistol's factory sights and accuracy allowed me to put 5 of 5 shots into the 10 ring time after time once the rear sights were ajusted up. So this particular pistol has some real accuracy potential with my typical handload. I am very impressed.

I will mount it in my Ransom Rest in the near future with some minor variants of powder charge to see what it can do.

Overall, I would suggest that the SA Trophy Match Stainless Steel 45 ACP pistol is a keeper.
