Apologies if this has been covered in another thread. I have a SA 1911 that has the ILS (Integral Locking System).

Although it has never caused any problems, (I have never used/engaged it) I was wondering how difficult it would be to remove/replace. I have a gun safe, and no children so this lock is of no use to me.

So, has anyone here removed the ILS, and what parts do I need to replace?

Thanks.

From what I understand it's as simple as popping out the pin holding in the mainspring and pulling it off then putting a new one on and the pin back in.

Easy to do, standard 1911 parts work in the ILS MSH.

Here's a Brownell's shopping list (lighter hammer spring improves trigger feel):

969-262-180 WOLFF 18 LB., HAMMER SPRING $4.29
965-011-162 R16BS MAINSPRING CAP STAINLESS STEEL 2.35
965-011-164 R16CS MAINSPRING PIN RETAINER S/S 2.35
965-011-166 R16DS MAINSPRING CAP PIN S/S 2.35

I did not like it either.Got a new housing with spring and caps for$9.99 on Ebay.I was going to just switch spring and caps but I am anal and new the key hole would bug me.CW

I've replaced the new ILS MSHs with standard types and you will need the following:

Main spring housing
Main spring (Not lighter than 18 lbs IMO)
Main spring cap
Main spring cap pin

You can reuse the mainspring housing retainer (cone tipped pin at the bottom of the main spring) that comes with the ILS housing or buy a new one, your choice.

Springfield's ILS mainspring cap is different from a standard MS cap. The ILS’ stem is shorter while the "cap" is much taller with a groove around its circumference which is engaged by the “lockâ€. The mainspring itself is also shorter to accommodate the altered MS cap.

The ILS internals from Springfield’s full size frames will fit inside a standard MSH, but a MS Cap pin will be needed to make it a captive assembly like the Colt and Kimber pistols.

The ILS internals from Springfield’s compact frames will NOT fit an Officers’ MSH because Springfield uses parts with the full size frame's smaller outside diameter rather than the Officers’ larger outside diameters. In this case, in addition to the list above, you must also buy a Mainspring housing retainer (cone shaped pin on bottom of mainspring) for the officers sized guns.
