What is your opinion on this gun? I have a chance to get one for $450 at the local shop and am considering it for concealed carry. I have shot my brother in law's XD40 subcompact and it felt pretty good to me. I was thinking of holding out for the 40 but the guy at the shop said it would be cheaper to practice with the 9 (I like cheaper) and it would still be fairly close as to the power level between the two.

Before someone tells me to use the search function, I tried that and came up with so much info that covered all forms of "springfield" "XD" and "subcompact". Maybe I need to do something different with my search entry but it didn't really help me.

Personally I prefer 9mm in the shorter, smaller pistols. Power is adequate for most concealed carry situations with good ammo, and the same gun in 9mm vs .40 S&W will usually hold more ammo, be more controllable, and be a bit easier to operate (clear jams, load/unload, etc) due to a lighter recoil spring weight. I believe they may also be more reliable, also due to the recoil spring.

All that being said, I own the XD subcompact in .40 S&W, and with a couple of hundred rounds through it the gun has not malfunctioned even once. I love it, but would still have preferred it be a 9mm.

This is for a new piece. He said it should be here in a day or two.

I had the same thoughts about the 40 vs 9mm. I am leaning in the direction of purchasing this one.

Any other thoughts are appreciated i.e.

What kind of holster are you using for concealed carry?

What kind of ammo?

Anything else I need to know?

I had a xd40sc, and thought it recoiled a lot. And I didn't shoot it much because of the ammo cost. Had a chance to sell it and buy a used xd9sc bitone, so I did. Best decision I ever made. It may be more accurate than the xd9 I use in IDPA. Love it. Carry it in a Crossbreed Supertuck. Practice mostly with Blazer.

I have th 3" 9mm Sub, 3" 40SW sub and 4" 40SW compact. I carry each of the sub's pretty much equally all the time. The 9 holds 10 w/o the extender 16 with it. I carry the 4" mostly outside carry when working the range. I probably have over 30k rounds through all three and all of them are pretty accurate.
I use a Blade-Tech composite for IWB that fits all my XD's and I have a DeSantis OWB.
I would start with the 9mm because the rounds are about $6 cheaper than the 49SW.

I have the XD-9 sub. The most important things to me are: safe to carry (met), easy to shoot (met), and conceals easily (subjective, but met).

I have the 10-round magazine for carry and car, and the 16 round magazine for the nightstand.

it's a great shooting gun. i've used it for kicks in pin and steel shooting nights at the range when i want to shoot something other than my competition guns. it's accurate enough to hit a bowling pin at 25 feet and a 6 inch steel plate at 50 feet, so i'd imagine you can easily hit an attacker at 10 feet.

To conceal I use a basic uncle mike's IWB holster. this is where it gets subjective - it works for me because i have a spare tire. i can cant it foward when i'm up and about, and can easily cant it back when i sit in the car or in a chair. i will probably get something smaller like a kahr pm9, but it's all because i'm fat lol.

I also own an SC XD9 and it's a great little gun and is accurate to boot. At standard distances of about 7 yards, I could think of a lot worse choices for a small gun than the XD. And for me, the thing has never failed to go bang. What's not to like?

My wife has an XD SC 9mm, service or full size for CCW but the XD SC is very nice, accurate and pleasant to shoot.

My mother in law has one as well and has trouble with it due to limp wristing but I haven't had a malfunction.

I have had and carried an XD9sc. It is a great firearm. I never had a single problem with it. It could hit the target at 30 feet. 9mm is a great round for carry and practice. As for the price it's not bad but I would save up a few $$ and buy a new one instead of a used one.

Not really unless you have big deep pockets. I have an XD9SC and it is about the same width (thick) as a 1911. With the regular magazine there isn't a lot to hold onto (think 3 fingers on grip at least for my hand size; not large).

How easy? Pocketable?

it's subjective to me, because i'm a relatively obese guy, and my pants aren't loose around my thighs and hip if ya know what i mean. :( with that said, a slimmer kahr pm9 is soon to be my choice for carry. the XD is still a double stack like the glock and M&P. i can't hide double stack guns in my hip very well and certainly not in my pocket. heck, even the single stack kahr pm9 shows up well in my pocket, which is why i choose IWB. again, that's why i called it subjective. i've seen people who pocket a glock 26 - and for those people, the XD-9 should also pocket well as they're pretty much the same width.

let me sum it up - the XD-9 subcompact is pretty much the same as a glock 26 for IWB, pocket, etc. as they're pretty much the same size and thickness.

The recoil on the XD-40 Subcompact is no worse than it is on the Service. I have both and they shoot about the same. The 9 is 10+1 with the flush-mount magazine and the 40 is 9+1. The only real advantage to the 9 is cheaper ammo. If its your only gun, that might be a real consideration. I think 40 is a better performer out of a short barrel, however.

if it's used spend a few extra bucks and get a new one instead, worth it for the warranty if nothing else

not true, springfield covers the life of the gun so it does NOT matter if its used because it is still covered

I love shooting my XD9sc, but it is a little wide for IWB. Winter time, it is a great gun for carry. I would say it is definately not pocketable, it would take minutes to draw out of a pocket.

welcome to thr, i have the 4" service model and the 3" sc and i love em, they are easy to conceal, accurate and reliable. i like my sc more so than the service model for some reason. and the guy at the shop is right the 9mm is the way to go, it is cheaper.

exactly. you can practice the hell out of 9mm for less than 40sw or 45acp.

but wyoshooter, if this is going to be for concealed carry, don't limit your choices to just the xd-9. another low-cost, and very easily concealable pistol for about $400 is the kahr CW9. or, the even smaller kahr pm-9 at $450-$500 used. then there's also the kel-tec p-9 and p-11, but those have a mixed bag of reviews. it's always good to cross-shop just so you can compare... and the worst that could happen, is that you truly know the XD-9 is the best of them all for you. :)

not true, springfield covers the life of the gun so it does NOT matter if its used because it is still covered

That may be true but why would you spend $450 on a used XD when you can get a brand new one for the same price?

$449 is usually the best price for a service, compact, or subcompact with no night sights. for used, i wouldn't pay more than $374, but at that price, you might as well buy new.

Wyoshooter,

My first, center fire semi-auto pistol was a XD40SC. I shot several thousand rounds through it and it was "bullet proof". Most of the rounds I shot were cast bullet reloads (reduced) which were a bit nicer to shoot. I think going with a 9mm is a good idea. Softer shooting and ammo is a bit less.

The XD seemed a little thick for carry to me. I sold the XD and bought a M&P (full size, 9mm) and it, too, was flawless through several thousand rounds. I liked the ergonomics of the M&P over the XD but the full size grip printed so it was just a "range" gun. I imagine the M&P Compact would have been better for carry.

I sold the M&P and now have a CZ Compact (9mm). I've used the XD, M&P and CZ shooting steel plates and I prefer the CZ. The CZ is all steel and is a bit heavy for CC but it's a heck of a shooter. It is also similar to a 1911 so you can carry cocked and locked (or hammer down for double action first shot.)

I should be getting a Kahr CW9 in a day or so and it should be ideal for CC, very thin and lightweight. (What can I say. I like to shoot different pistols and there's no range where I can try out different guns so I buy & try and try something else.)

There is a reason this baby was Gun of the Year. After about 3000 rounds through my xd9sc, it has gone bang EVERY time. It is surprisingly accurate, and a hoot to shoot. Ammo is relatively inexpensive and I can get 17 rounds in that little sucker with the included extended mag. What's not to like? I've seen a bunch of them "used" at gun shows for about $350. Good luck!

By the way, I totally agree that it would be a bit thick for an everyday carry gun unless you had some good leather. Got a Rohrbaugh for the pocket.

I, too, have a 9sc. I enjoy taking it to the range, have found it to hit where it is aimed, relatively easy to conceal. I wear a Tauga open top OWB holster (think Galco Concealable).I have found the Pearce extension works well fior thumb placement on the 10 round mags.

I like the xd/sc, traded for a NIB 9mm version, but as a few guys mentioned, it was too thick and blocky for everyday concealed carry here in SE, FL. My glock 23 prints less, and I don't find that one good either for the same reason. My PF-9 is about as big as I choose to go to get a balance of small, concealable, and enough pop with 7+1, and a spare clip in a pocket. I have carried full time for 35 years and feel comfortable with the Kel-tek.
