In 2012 when shopping for AR’s for myself and son I purchased a Stag Model 1 for my son. I do not remember exactly why I purchased a Stag other than it was recommended to me by someone I trust. I didn’t know much about AR’s then and don’t know much more about them now. My son’s Stag has been shot quite a bit more than my DPMS A2 Classic but it has not been used hard at all. It is accurate and has never had issues. I started thinking about Stag today in regard to the fact I never see anything in print about them. In fact the only thing I’ve seen is when they got in trouble with the BATF a couple of years ago. Stag is still in business though and under new ownership since their BATF issues. So what’s the deal with Stag AR’s? Where do they rate on the bad, good, better, best, continuum?

My preferred lower. Great quality, good fit. Seems lots of people talk about their lowers/uppers rattling...I have several Stags mated to their uppers and never saw a loose one.

Are they talking about the receivers rattling or the sproing in the buffer tube because I have one that fits together well but the spring is a little loud. I want to get some lube and see if that helps.

And as far as righty-lefty goes it took me damn near a month to notice that it was off so....I'm not sure how much of an issue it would really be....overall a nice gun though.

As a lefty I have a Stage Model 3L and it's my only left handed AR. I do like it alot but with so many of my ARs being right handed the lefty one seems odd when I shoot it, go figure right lol.

It is the "smoothest" and best fit and finish AR I own, so there is that. But it's not any more or less reliable than any other one I own.

They moved to Wyoming or Montana. Not a "lefty" company, unless I'm missing something. I have a Model 1 also, works fine, no complaints.

Stag was, and still may be, one of Colts subcontractors that made/makes their lower and upper receivers...or at least that's what I've heard.

The quality is better than most, not at good as some. (Truth be known, all ARs are all so close to same it doesnt matter. If they are Mil Spec...its the same same, you just pay more for a fancy name stamped on them, unless you get into the top end customs brands).

Omg...I need coffee...you guys mean left hand or right hand....

That's what the guy at the gun store told me when I ordered a lower. That build includes the lower, upper, barrel, and BCG from Stag. When I do my part, it shoots sub MOA.

A little known secret. Stag Arms Was a Sub Contractor for Colt, years ago.
Stag was founded by the son of the owner of CMT. They operated from the same location and Stag essentially served as the retail brand and CMT was the contract parts supplier. When the owner of Stag was convicted of violating firearms laws Stag was sold to a private equity company and is no longer associated with CMT.

I wonder if anything has changed regarding quality of production? My Stags are all "pre-drama".

I'll add too, the reason why he was convicted is because of missing serial numbers, of lower receivers still on the line. It smacked of political conviction to me. Happened under the previous administration. Unless I missed something. I dont think he sold, or allowed to be sold, any unnumbered parts. It was a grey area that was exploited to the hilt. It was a plea agreement that the company change hands, no doubt someone was hoping nobody would take it over and its doors shut.

Ironic. My Stag shoots better than either the M-16A1 or the M-16A2s I was issued. For that matter, the SP1 I had shot better than any rifle I was issued. Too bad I sold the SP1. It would be fun to have the SP1 and the Stag go head-to-head in a shoot off.

I have a feeling I'd need a whole lot of ammo. And a lunch.
