Stainless Ruger Gunsite Scout

I just picked this up at Cabela's tonight. I was never a fan of the laminate stock on the Scout, although I liked the grey wood. I've never seen a version like this one that I bought. It isn't even on the Ruger website. When I saw real wood and a stainless steel barrel, I bought it. Considering that no one has these, I think $899 was a decent price. The original Ruger Scout was priced at $825. I bought some Hornady Match and Hornady TAP ammo to test tomorrow.

Very cool. I am a fan of the concept but just don't have the need for a rifle like it. I am glad you are happy. let us know how it shoots.

Yeah, it's not for everyone. I just like the idea of a high capacity bolt action with irons on it. It's not the prettiest gun, but I hear it is capable of 1 MOA or better. That is pretty good when one considers the short barrel and light weight of the gun.

Please post additional pics and details. Would like to see how the receiver is marked; "Gunsite" or "Cabelas". Does the stock have the "Gunsite" logo on the butt of the grip?

The receiver reads "Ruger Gunsite Scout". There is nothing about Cabela's written on it, so maybe it's not an exclusive? I'm not sure. The butt of the grip doesn't have the Gunsite logo laser etched in like the laminate. I'm not sure why, other than maybe they didn't want to ruin the look of the wood. I wouldn't have minded it.

The model number is 06804. It says matte stainless and wood.

The article in this month's "Guns and Ammo", which I received yesterday, pushed me over the edge to buy the rifle. The author got better than 1 MOA at 100yds.

I have to admit, I like the original laminate stock better, but hey, it's nice to be different. I have been thinking of buying the Gunsite but can't see why I need to.

I like the look of the grey stock better, but I like real wood over laminate. It would be nice to have real wood in that color with a stainless barrel.

I'm just about to take delivery of a US standard GSR and discovered that the Australian or export model is stainless steel as a standard, sans flash hider and with a barrel of just over 18 inches.

I'd not heard that Cabelas ran this exclusive, was thinking that Livsey's would do that as an encore to their series of stainless steel M77 internationals. The last one of those was selling at about the same time as the Cabela's special GSR, perhaps this winter will see the same thing.

Great looking rifle, one that you're unlikely to see someone else with at the range.

I'll have to do some looking into this. A stainless Ruger GSR would cover a lot of ground for me I think.

Talked to Ruger yesterday - they said they stopped making the stainless version altogether.

Arrrgh! Go figure, all I want is stainless with a real wood stock and they stop making it... :banghead:

I haven't heard that they quit making them. Nor does it make sense as they sell like hotcakes. I'm in the process of buying another-looks like I better get on it, just in case. Not trying to be mean but here's mine...

Great guns.The Current GSR is just an evolution of Col.Coopers ideas,they were never exactly carved in stone,as the scout concept has evolved over the years.Many traditionalists moan over the detachable box magazine.I like it,and for those that live in areas where a high-capacity semi-auto is a pita or a no-no this may fill the bill.
With match ammo it is capable of sub moa.I would like to get one with the laminated or synthetic stock in stainless for a truly all weather gun.

From strictly a sales point(Traditionalists put your nomex underwear on),I feel a .223 version would sell well for those who want .223/5.56 but cannot handle the recoil of a .308 and that .223 ammo is cheaper.Again many people live in areas that owning a semi rifle is either a pita or illegal.

Each is entitled to his own choices, but the 5.56 role is already well filled by the AR platform. They fill different roles and are not, IMO, interchangeable.

Regarding the claims that Ruger has discontinued production of all stainless steel GSRs;

Are we sure we aren't confusing the limited production Cabela's exclusive with the international or export version of the GSR?

Ruger replied to me in an email that they have "discontinued all stainless steel GSR's" when I sent in a query as to where I could find one for sale.

My regular GSR shoots the cheap Prvi ammo ($14 a box) amazingly well. Groups almost as well as the $30 FGMM or $39 Superformance.

Scouts are something a little different in the universe of rifles, but they sure are handy and easy to use for field shooting.
