I am looking for a starter tactical scope for my .308 rifle. I'm not looking to break the bank as this would just be a starter scope. Nothing too fancy.

ANY suggestions?

I suggest the Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x40mm mil-dot. I bought mine for $180 and it is a very good tactical scope for the money.

Do you want one that looks cool or one that will work. Its hard to sort this out anymore but if you want a true tactical scope get ready to break the bank. If you want a good quality scope that will work for hunting and general use then that opens up a wider field.
Not trying to pile on but how about some idea on budget, intended use, must have features etc.

The scope doesn't have to have ajdustable magnification. All I really want for now is adjustable knobs and mil dot. The 3200 Elite that Rubber Duck is pretty much the style I am looking for. It's about my budget too. $250ish. It's going on a Savage .308 rifle. Nothing fancy. Down the road I will be interested in a higher end scope, when i can get a better rifle that is.

Mueller Tac II 3-10X44

Put it on my Savage 10FCP and I love it. A good, no nonsense mil-dot scope with nice turrets. About $270, but if you shop around and use some coupon codes, you can get it cheaper (I think I paid about $230 or 240 IIRC).

And a review site which seems to have unbiased reviews:

And if you want some slightly bigger turrets with more grip and a better feel, you can order (or trade for as I did) a set of these turrets from snipercentral.com (you won't find them for sale anymore, but email Mel and he'll set you up with them):

I just picked up a Stevens .223 with a Mueller tactical scope on it. Mine is the 8.5-25x40 model. Its a decent scope from what I can tell so far.

I have never used a Bushnell 3200 tactical scope but have handled them. They look like a good scope to me. Plus the get good reviews.

Ok, I can see Vortex, but how have you had good luck with BSA?

I had one for my first scope when I didn't know much, all it did was fog up and lose zero.

Just wondering.....

The Bushy Elite is good glass for the money. That's what I started with before Huskymaw, Nightforce, and S&B. Also, some of the Leupold VX3's will do nicely. I've busted clay pigeons at 800+ with the Bushnell on a Howa .308. It's not always about the scope or the gun or the caliber. Sometimes it just comes down to the shooter....

The Vortex Viper is a nice scope, but with the OP's budget (and desired features) the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40mm is as good as you can get IMO.

:)

idk why no one suggests these sooner
I can tell you why I didn't: I can't stand the lying ******** at SWFA and they are the only retailer for the scope. It is a good optic, but I refuse to buy or recommend anything they have, but I do take full advantage of their bandwidth when I want to review features, price shop, and research new optics. :D

if you look down in the trading post i think there is a 3200 for sale still.... just saying.

Maverick why dont you tell us how your really feel lol just kidding

ive never dealt with them so i dont know if they are "bleepity bleep bleeps" or not but im sure there is some way other than just SWFA to obtain the scopes Ebay perhaps?

but ive looked through one a buddy has and its very nice for the price point its sold at

The SS is a SWFA exclusive. If you get it through Ebay new you are getting it through SWFA's ebay account, which they post on fairly regularly. I haven't had any experience with them, though I have heard that their website is NOT updated for inventory and the only way to know if an item is in stock is to call. Other than that not much bad that I have heard of.

I will say that the SS scope is one I would avoid. When it was introduced it was the next best thing since sliced bread. Everyone on the tactical forums LOVED the thing for the price. Then issues popped up here and there, the fanboys attacked those claiming faults, and things went on. Then more and more issues popped up. I don't know if this is strickly do to volume of a new scope becoming popular or what but I have heard FAR more complaints about the SS line than about that 3200 10x scope. If it were my money I would spend it on the 3200 and save the rest for something 3-5x the cost or spend it on ammo. Just too many doubts in my mind to jump on a SS sight unseen.

Unfortunately no (unless it is used), but there are plenty of other nice rifle scopes out there that I can rely on and buy them from a reputable company (Liberty Optics and Optics Planet have been outstanding, and my recent purchase from CDNN was smooth as well). These retailers don't see the need to discredit honest competitive retailers and mislead their customers to drum up more business, something that doesn't sit well with me. Oh, and they generally have better prices to boot. :D

Mav i can completely understand that logic

id still be hard pressed not to get the scope i wanted tho

good thing im putting off my long range rifle purchases for a while lol

I'm not trying to suggest that you (or anyone else) shouldn't, but that doesn't mean that I will recommend it either. Here is a link to the whole story (or the bulk of it anyway), if you want to know more. That said it is a good scope, I have used them and find the SS to be a good value, with a good set of features.
