To steady your aim with a .22 auto pistol reach out and hold the barrel with your thumb and finger.

It makes quite an improvement over a conventional two hand hold.

Uh, what? :what:

I see you own a Woodsman. If you're serious, can you attach a picture of this technique? I'm not sure we're understanding it correctly.

I just use a large set of Vice Grips. Gives me a tactical hold for my heavy recoil .22LR.

The OP is not talking about recoil, but about a steady grip.

I have a Ruger MkII 6" barrel which I sometimes hold like a rifle for steadiness myself.

(ADDED: I catch myself in the recommended hand-over-hand grip subconsciously pulling left with the left hand, and have switched to the dreaded and reviled cup-and-saucer grip for a while to break the reflex. Try whatever and see if it works.)

And to get pedantic, wouldn't vice grips attached to the barrel of a pistol make it an AOW (evil foregrip on a handgun)?

It would become a custom tool and just make it a rapid action nail remover.

I Grok the steadier grip, but since I'm upgrading my 10mm guns to .22LR for more power I feel this type of mod would serve a dual purpose.

I have seen people shooting TC Contenders with an overhand weak-hand grip to steady the gun while they look through the scope. I guess it works for some people.

I prefer the traditional two-handed grip.

But we all know that REAL shooters can do it off-hand (bullseye-style, one-hand). :)

On a 6 1/2" barrel Colt Woodsman target I reach out and lay the barrel, near it's end just behind the front sight, on my open hand and thumb.

It steadies the aim.

Oooookie dokie then, whatever. I don't think it'd work to good with my Ruger SR22, could cause jams and might cause bleeding, and if I put my finger over the barrel of my Mark 2, I'm not sure how I'd see the sights.

I don't even like putting a finger on the trigger guard like some do. If I need a steadier rest in the field, I'll look for a fence post or tree trunk or sit and clamp my hands and the gun between my knees, works pretty well.

Savage, you mean like how many steady a billiard cue?

I don't have any .22 pistols with barrels that long, so I'll not be trying this, but I'm thinking that's what you mean..

Yes, like a billiards.

Of course this only applies to certain pistols.

And I don't have a CF auto with a long enough barrel! :)

This reminds me of the video with the guy who has a foregrip mounted to the rail on a G18/modified G17 and the grip slides off during recoil and he shoots his own hand.

Okay, I get it now (posts 17 and 18.) As mentioned, I don't have any handguns with a long-enough barrel to try it out, but I don't rule out suggestions that can be tried safely.

Maybe I'll try it with my near-ancient Crosman 1377 air pistol; it has a ten-inch barrel.

I might do it with a scope or red dot but I'd never get a good sight picture with open sights.

kill da wabbitt....

This was a funny thread. Personally, I vote for a good tripod with pintle and T&E mechanism to deal with that 22LR recoil... One way to ensure consistent shot placement - worked for the M60 and now for the 240B... Don't forget the range card...
