I have never shot any kind of pistol competition before, but today I shot the Steel Challenge at our range.

I used a Buckmark with a Primary Arms red dot and a S&W Model 41 with a J Point red dot. I switched back and forth and I found the 41 to point a little better for me.

I shot some real competitive times, but also shot some very poor ones. I wasn't consistent enough. I also decided a bigger red dot (bigger FOV), would help. I'll put an old 40MM Tasco Pro Point on the S&W 41 next time I shoot pistol.

I am going to shoot my .22 AR next month, and then we do no shoot the Steel Challenge again until February.

It was fun. I can see myself doing this a lot more. :)

Dang, sounds like you had fun. Now since you don't have to reload .22, are you going to do any ammo comparison tests? :D

It IS fun.
I'm jealous about the model 41.

I shoot 9mm, and the bigger 1.5mm F.O. rod is faster than 1mm for my old eyes; but I have shot (at :uhoh:) very small 4" square plate at longer distances, and the larger dia front sight was almost too big for the target.
With red dot it may be similar.

My goal was to be in the top 50%. I came in 13 of 28 overall, and 2nd of 4 in my division, Rimfire Optics. Not bad for the first time.

Yep, lots of fun. I may do rimfire rifle next time. Gonna try Fed Auto Match and hope the misfires decrease from the Fed bulk 550 pack.

It sounds like you're already needing to set your goal 'higher'.
You'll be a lot more 'comfortable' next match.
Good job.

At some point, we are simply competing with our previous "best" times and scores but it SURE IS FUN to climb the ladder.

Good show on your first Steel Challenge. :D

I shot RFRO in November, but had re-installed the hammer spring backwards on my AR after cleaning the lower and had lots of misfires, which showed up in the scoring. They had me in RFRI for some reason (The only one), and they did not show overall results, so I do not know where I ended up, but it had to down in the middle of the pack, or worse. A bad way to end the season.

We shot for the first time this season last Saturday. I shot the Tactical Solutions AR upper again, with the hammer spring installed correctly and only had two misfires and one jam all day. I felt like I shot really well. They emailed the results today and I was 5th out of 40 in the overall results. :D

The first five in the overall were RFRO. This time they did not provide results by type. I forgot to mark senior on the signup sheet, so I was not listed in those results.

The better I used both eyes on the target, and not focusing on the dot, the faster I was. I picked up a couple of the new Black Dog easy load mags and they are the way to go. I shot 5 or 6 out of 8 stages without a mag change, and they are so easy on the fingers. They hold 32, but I loaded 31 every time.

This is fun, I should have started long ago. :)
