While one should not take a long distance shot with a 410 like down with a 12 gauge, the 410 has taken a lot of turkeys over the years. The pellets out of a 410 shell are still moving at the same speed as out of a 12 gauge, you just have less shot.
The trick is using a full choke, 3" shells and most importantly patterning the shotgun. One of my preferred factory loads is #6 shot Winchester 3" Super X and I have taken my share of turkeys with it using my did's old single shot (as a kid) and with my 410 Mossberg 500 with full choke.
