Hope someone can help.

I need to strip a Winchester Model 70 pre 64 bolt. It does not have the safety (thats how I bought it years ago). I have the parts to fit it but am having dramas stripping it as I can't place the safety in the middle detent. Any ideas?

Thanks
Mick

It's not easy, and not easy to explain. Obviosly, you have to get the cocking piece back in cocked position in order to unscrew. When you are at the notch, hook the release on somthing that won't mar it, like a solid piece of brass in a vice and pull the bolt, bringing the cocking piece back, as cocked. Holding this, turn the bolt body past the notch, make another revolution and repeat. It is extra challenging because obviously, the release is sloped in a way that works against you. Emphasis--use something that will not damage or scratch the release, such as brass or aluminum. Good luck!

I suppose you could insert some sort of a pin in the firing pin whole and push it all back with the firing pin, but that doesn't sound like a good plan to me. I know the other approach works, it's just a bitch to do.

OK have the firing pin removed from the bolt body. How do I seperate the cocking piece from the firing pin?

Thanks,
Mick

There should be no need to take the cocking piece off the firing pin.

Work on it from the other end.
Grasp the firing pin sleeve in front of the spring and pull it back against spring pressure.
It can now be turned 1/4 turn either way and removed from the firing pin, followed by the spring.

The FP is retained in the bolt sleeve by the FP stop screw, loosen it to remove the FP from the bolt sleeve.

Everything goes back in the bolt sleeve from the rear, then tighten the stop screw, and re-install the FP spring & sleeve.
