Purdue student faces 10 felony charges
By Mike Westervelt
The Tippecanoe County prosecutor filed 10 felony charges Thursday against a Purdue student in connection with the rape, torture and confinement of a woman.
Jeffrey Earl Akard, 32, of 1300 Morton St. Apt. B, Lafayette, is charged with three counts of rape, three counts of deviate conduct, two counts of criminal confinement and two separate counts of battery.
The victim, a 28-year-old white female, was reportedly held against her will for 15 hours last Saturday. According to the charges filed with the court, she was "tazed" several times, raped at least once and drugged with pills.
Akard is a senior in the College of Technology.
The affidavit reported the victim was walking near North Sixth and Union streets in Lafayette, early Saturday morning when she noticed a man later identified as Akard, who appeared to be intoxicated. She offered to help him back to his house where she was later confined, according to the charge's document.
The victim stated in a court affidavit that Akard said "Today is the day you are going to die," and threatened her multiple times. She said he pressed what she believed to be a handgun against the side of her head and saw bullets located around the bedroom.
Lt. Jim Taul, a public information officer with the Lafayette Police Department, said charges of child pornography may be alleged against Akard in the near future as well. He said a SWAT team that positioned itself outside Akard's residence confiscated his laptop.
"(Child porn) has been found and is being reviewed; there's a lot," said Taul, hinting at a massive amount.
The victim said that at one point during the ordeal, she was shown pornographic images of small children in sexual situations on Akard's computer. She said Akard appeared in many of the photos and also appeared in a short video, having intercourse with a young girl, according to the affidavit.
The report stated, "Another picture (the victim) said she vividly recalled was of a small female child with a rope around her neck, who appeared to be dead. (She) said Akard told her he killed all the children in the pictures she saw and he was going to kill her too."
Bound by handcuffs and plastic ties around her ankles, the woman stated she pretended to not know what was going on when she awoke later that evening. The affidavit stated she played it off as, "We must have gotten pretty kinky last night ... (She) pretended not to remember anything so he would not get suspicious and not let her leave."
The victim was released shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday and sought safety with a stranger near the intersection of Robert and 12th streets.
Court records indicated she identified Akard as her assailant from a photo line-up and directed police to his residence in Lafayette.
Akard has previous offenses in Georgia, including using firearms to make terroristic threats, carrying a concealed weapon, obstruction of officers, aggravated assault and driving under the influence.
