There is this big black cat that keeps coming into my yard and beating up my smaller cat :fire:. I have tried running at him screaming and shooting at him with my full-auto airsoft gun. But he just keeps coming back, What should I do?

Um...call your local animal control...?

They'll put out a live-trap cage or something. Also make sure it's not a neighbor's cat, some people are really irresponsible with letting them out.

You can also keep your cat indoors...

What You Should Do (In A Perfect World)

Track the cat (or attach a GPS unit to him after humane capture!) and find out who the irresponsible owner is. That's your problem..not the feline who's just being a cat.

Haul the creature over to their house and lay it on the line: Here's YOUR cat. He's beating up MY cat in MY yard. Tell them if you see the offending marauder on your property again, he's going to the big house to do hard time.

Check your state laws. I had the same trouble a few years ago. I just shot the offending animal* & burried it.

12 gauge birdshot. 1 round.

Feral cats are a varmint in some states - check your local laws. Live traps are a good option, paintball guns with pepperballs might be fun...

Garden hose. Cat's really gon't like to get wet. Had a pair doing their mating ritual on my fence -- sounds like babies being tortured, a good squirt with the garden hose sent them packing and they've not returned.

--wally.

At my house, they come around when my dogs are inside and at night. I'm going with the paintballs.

And the cops righteously coming. This is someone's YARD.
You seem a little TOO eager to use firearms to solve otherwise-solveable problems in your posts...and that's dangerous.

For neighbors, and for all of us who support the 2A rights, when someone does that, and it makes it onto the media as "gun nut uses shotgun at cat in suburbs". :scrutiny:

Thats why i dont want to use lethal force

If i shoot it with a paintball gun it would leave it with a huge welt and paint on it. And if I kill it i could get the cops called on me. I still dont know whose cat it is so i'm either going to actualy hit with the airsoft gun or spray it with a hose.

I'm going with the paintballs because animal control can then identify the cat and ticket the owners. Hit 'em in the wallet and they just might wise up.

Maned Wolf,

#1. The cat I shot had already killed several of my kittens & badly injured 2.
#2. I did the right thing by shooting that cat. I still sleep soundly:) .
#3. I believe in the inalienable right to protect yourself, your family & friends and your property against menaces.
#4. I have no qualms about using non-lethal airsoft rounds. I just don't have any.

Call your animal control. They usually have live traps for use. You sometimes have to leave a deposit. Set it up on the side of the house with a can of tuna for bait. Once you have the offending cat, call them and they will take it away.

If the owners bail it out, it may be back. So just do the same thing again. I did that to a cat that was bothering mine at one time. It cost the owner about 100 dollars to bail out his kitty. After the 3rd time, I never saw the cat again.

As a cat owner - one who's lost a cat to a neighbor ignoring leash laws - I'm loathe to advocate lethal force against what may well be someone's pet where NON-lethal recourse is available.

That said, I'd be in V4Vendetta's corner on this one. Attack my pets on MY PROPERTY at YOUR peril.

As for the present problem, call Animal Control. Both paintballs and traps are legitimate options should the ACO fail to act.

Appology

Sorry V i didnt know know that it killed some of your kittens. If I was in that situation i would have opened up a can on it to!

I like the hose ideas. Cat's usually hate water and the force of the spray should leave an impression on the critter while not harming it.

If it comes back....shoot it. :D

Just kidding.

Thank you Stallion.:) Apology accepted.

Be careful, I know that in alot of states if you kill any non-game animal that enters your property that is not actively a threat to yourself you can be in alot of trouble. My mother's neighbor shot a young dog for getting into his garbage not too long ago (he is a real creep) and he really paid the price. First, my mom nearly beat him to death with a rake handle (my mother is kind of mean...imagine a butch lesbian that likes men), then when he called the police on her they ended up taking him to jail for the shooting. He ended up with thousands of dollars in fines and a suspended 2yr sentence with probation. It worked out though...he ended up having to sell his house (which was built by my grandfather) and my mom bought it. :)

+1 for the hose.

The hose only works when you're out there. They do a lot of damage when you're not.

17 HMR V-MAX it will punch straight through him and he will run off and die elsewhere so that you do not have to deal with the carcase.
I hate to shoot someones pet:( but I raise Quail and other game birds and can not have strays killing my investment at will. So for me it is Bang problem solved if the choice is between the cat and the pocket book, pocket book wins every time.
For those of you that live in the burbs try a 17 Mach 2 it will give the same result without much risk to the neighbors.

This stuff reaches the level of just plain silliness.

If you're a tax payer you're paying money for services, and one of those services is the animal control officer.

Why make things more complicated (and potentially bad for you) when you don't have too?
CALL THE ANIMAL CONTROL PEOPLE. Let them do the job you're paying them to do.

They'll come out and set up a live trap, baited with tuna.
Cats being cats, the gangster won't be able to resist, and he'll get trapped.
The animal control officer will come out and pick him up.
If he belongs to someone and they claim him, it'll cost them money.
If No one claims him, that's not your problem.

In either event, you won't be seeing him again.

One thing the "shoot first" people never take into account are the unintended consequences for YOU.

Such as:
Someone sees you shooting or otherwise harming the cat and calls the humane society or police.
These days the laws about animal abuse are enforced.
This ain't the 1940's.
These days people get ARRESTED for hurting animals even on their own property.
They also get sued for hurting an innocent Fluffy.
Without some kind of paper trail, it's just your word that the cat was a nuisance.

Second case: You get into some kind of altercation. Maybe a shooting, or just a dispute of some sort.
Suddenly, to the police, prosecutor, or someone's lawyer, YOU'RE the guy who's the hot head who uses violence as a FIRST option.
After all, you're the guy that hurt a poor cat without even bothering to call the proper authorities.

This is one of those cases where you're much better off to "do the right thing" and the right thing is to call the animal control people and let them do their job.

Forget the guns, water, paint balls, and all that. Call it in, and go about your business.

dfariswheel...

I went the live-trap route and caught a bunch. Some owners bailed them out and now the cats are too smart for the trap. AC won't issue at large tickets unless the cats can be positively ID'd, hence the paintballs.
Would that your solution was workable.
