The reason is twofold. It provides a more reliable spark to the powder, and keeps the primer from backing out with a low pressure load. Wax bullet loads for revolvers powered only by primers will back out the primer also in the same manner. You must keep the drilled cases segregated from normal cases.
The helping with primer setback also helps prevent shoulder setback on the case.

I keep having to talk myself out of a 35 Whelen for a wide variety of ammo options from heavy slow cast to standard jacketed ammo.
I have a 35Whelen. I would rather have a 358 Win.
If you do decide to go through with trying subsonic in 308. I have some 245 RNFP. Or some 250 gr FN that would need powder coated.

Looking at the Hodgson chart please be careful about double, triple or more charges. I'm still under the belief that a load should be over 50% of case capacity so you can't double charge
I was impressed with a suppressed 308 (AR10) and 22lr and have thought about Looking into something similar but was thinking about 458 socom for the extra diameter.

Those are exactly the reasons cartridges like 300 BO and 45 ACP and 45 Colt are preferred for dedicated suppressor use at subsonic velocities for minimum noise. I’m just tinkering and exploring flexibility rather than purpose built systems, like a suppressed 45 Colt lever action and 850 fps loads with 300 grain bullets.

I shoot a lot of subsonic .308. I call it 300 Blackout though:) .223 subs, will be a miracle to get an AR to cycle. If you did it in a bolt gun... you'd have some benefit over .22 LR... namely a much better BC, heavier bullet and far more accurate round. Heavy sub .22 like the aguila 60 gr just don't work well in the twists most 22's come with. I rebarreled a 10/22 to shoot those specifically, and was a tac driver until I couldn't get anymore. I say try it, have fun, report back.
