I took my eleven year old son, his SKS Sporter, my MAK90, a range bag of ammo, assorted .22, .38 Special pistols, and a cooler of drinks to our local shooting range. It was a great Sunday afternoon with moderate temps and a light breeze.
We started out burning surplus 7.63x39 ammo by bump firing the SKS and MAK at 2 liter plastic drink bottles in front of a dirt birm. Appearently up until we got there it had been pretty laid back with some bolt action fire and various pistols. Between the two of us bump firing 30 round AK mags it got to sounding a little like WW III. Some of the other guys started drifting over to where we were set up and were commenting on my son's bump fire technique and looking at our weapons.
This is a membership range. It is outdoors and very laid back. No glass targets, pick up your trash, call cease fire before going down range, ect. that is about the extent of the rules. One old guy came over to remind me that no full auto weapons were allowed. I told him thanks and if I ever get one I will remember that. When he saw my 11 year old bump fire a 30 round mag in seconds I thought his eyes would bug out. I tried to get him to shoot my MAK but he said he was too old for such foolishness.
I hope I never get that old!
Most of the other guys were interested and a few went to retrieve AR's and other semi autos from thier trucks. Soon we were in a line burning up a row of pallet target stands. Chunks of wood and cardboard were flying and drink bottles going airborne.
GREAT FUN.
When we ran out of ammo we spent the rest of the time seeing how long we could keep a 20 oz. drink bottle moving with our CCW pistols. I got up to seven hits in a row with my G36 Glock using 230 grain FMJ the drink bottle went airbourne after each hit and hit the ground before my next shot but was on the ground less than one second before the next hit. My son was shooting his Model 10 .38 Special and he was averaging 4 to fivr hits out of six shoots with around 2 to 3 seconds between shots.
My idea of a great day!
