Just got a New Model Super Blackhawk, blued, 7.5 inch barrel, made in 1979. No box but it did come with the original grips and two sets of Herrett RSB walnut grips. Don't think the Herretts are made anymore. It's probably been shot, at least a little, but it looks absolutely mint. No sign of wear on any part and only the lightest ring on the cylinder. The chambers and bore are pristine and it locks up tight. Makes me wonder if the owner fired it a few times, didn't like the recoil of a 44 magnum, and put it away. I think the seller got it at an estate sale.

It was $350 out the door along with 1,000 hard cast .430 bullets. Did I get a decent deal? I love Ruger single actions but never got the Super BH. Really looking forward to trying it with regular magnum loads and 44 specials.

I doubt I would have passed that up... heck ya got 75.00 worth of bulletts or more depending on what bullet it is...

I've had three Sbhs Two stainless one blued, I've never paid more than 375 for any of them, they are without a doubt the best sub 500 dollar .44 magnum, you got your self a gun that'll take little ole bunnies to grizzlys with the right loads.

BullRunBear: I think You did just great on Your deal. I bought my SBH in late 1970`s and I still have it, and shoot it quite a bit. And I have always reloaded and casted for it. I have never had any type of a problem with it. And it is a shooter, just like most every SBH I have ever seen. I have killed several Pigs and a few Deer with it, and plan to take some more.

Guys, Thanks for the confirmation about the deal. Now the fun part: working up loads in magnum and specials that the SBH likes. I plan to put a Hogue Monogrip on it. I use one on my 45 Colt Blackhawk and it really helps with big hands. The standard Ruger grip feels small. The Herrett grips are big enough but the checkering is very sharp and without gloves would tear up my hand with any recoil.

I'll have to dig out the digital camera, haven't posted a photo on THR for some years.

Sounds like a decent deal to me. I have had a couple of Super Blackhawks and have found that with the right pair of grips they are considerably more comfortable to shoot with full house loads than with the factory grips.

Old me can remember when they were introduced at $96. I have had a half dozen and in the last four years inherited one, a three screw from my brother's estate, and bought one where I worked for $250 a year ago...it had had little love and was missing quite a bit of blue, had a couple scratches and the grips were nicked but the action was tight. It shoots fine.
$350 is a better price than you'll see in most stores for a good solid Super. I'd probably have bought it and sold my ratty one.

You did good. The new ones are substantially more expensive and, IMO, are not of higher quality than those of the late 70s era. I purchased mine new and paid just over $600 for it back in 2013. At the time they were going for a premium due to availability so I paid a bit more than I would have been willing to otherwise.

These days, they are still going for well over $500. With the extras, I would not have hesitated at that deal.

I traded two mil-surp pistols for a gently used Ruger Super Blackhawk valued at $485 and am very happy with it. I would have been very, very, very happy with it for $350, not even counting the 1,000 bullets.

You got a real good deal.
