super redhawk & red dot

I wanted to mount a Gilmore/Leupold on my Super redhawk with the ruger rings, but the folks at gilmore say a 44mag needs 4 rings to hold properly. This would require a weaver rail and removal of sights. Anybody useing a red dot on a 44mag ? if so what did you do for mounts ? thanks Peter.

I have a S&W model 29 with a Gilmore red dot with 6" barrel. I removed the rear sight and mounted a Weaver 401 top mount base (rail). I had to machine an extra groove in the rail. I used the rings that came with the Red Dot. I've shot some fairly hot handloads in it and have had no problems with the sight slipping.

You'll need one of these if you are going to install something other than a standard one inch scope and Ruger rings.

I have used a Leupold pistol scope on a couple of S&W 44 mags as well as a Ruger Super RH with 2 rings and have never had a problem - don't know if the Gilmore is a heavier sight that requires a more secure hold. Thought of mounting my Pro-Point red dot on the Smith 44 sometime - if I do I will again use 2 rings.

Same here. I have a Leupold 4X EER mounted on my SRH with only 2 rings. It has been rock solid for going on 5 years now.

Fiseyou, I would try the 2 ring approach first. It won't cost you a thing extra and if it doesn't seem to hold up then you can spend the extra dough and get a 4 ring setup.

Reason why Leupold recommends four rings is because the Gilmore uses an oversized tube and large optics. Distance from the center of the bore and the center of the Gilmore glass is greater, which makes the forces under recoil more severe. Mounts for this scope are also very minimalistic and do not have enough surface area to grab on to when shooting magnum calibers.

I've had a Bushnell 2x6 variable scope mounted on my SRH with the two-ring Ruger mounts since I've had it (10+ years) and never had a problem. I shoot heavy 240 and 300 grain bullets out of it too.

well , I too have a scope mounted in the ruger mounts (2x leupold) and had no trouble, so I thought I'd go with an LG-1 with (1" tube) and another set of Ruger mounts. kinda switch back and forth see which I did best with , but the reply I got back is not to encouraging.

I have a Redhawk with a 30MM red dot on it and only use 2 rings and shoot hot 44 MAG loads and no problems, I also have a 625 with an Aim Point with only one ring. My BFR in S&W500MAG has an Ultra Red Dot Red sight on it and only use 2 rings and have shot over 300 rounds with it and no problems with rings or sight moving. I don't see using 4 rings for this application.

I have that weigand mount on my SRH w/ a c-more red dot on top. Never had a problem.

I have a red-dot on my 454 and I only use 2 rings. I've shot some really hot loads too. The front shade on the scope popped off on me, but that wasn't because of the rings.
