I was just doing some musings on suppressed weapons and thought that a lever action would be a good canidate. Why? It has a repeat shot capability (pretty rapid) and if you shoot once and that's all you need, then you don't have to work the (pretty quiet) action until you are out of whatever situation you are in. From what I've seen in videos, the cycling of a semi-auto's action can be pretty loud What kind of ballistics would a sub-sonic 45/70 give?

Would depend on bullet weight, wouldn't it?

Which might be dependent on twist rate. At close enough (15 meters?), it wouldn't matter, but there will definitely be a point at which a say, 500 grain bullet probably won't stabilize from a Marlin or Winchester.

Ask Wild Alaska- they're always doing silly things with lever guns.

Trust me on this one. Any weapon larger than MAYBE 22lr suppressed or no is going to be a heck of a lot louder than the sound of the action cycling. But, you might be onto something witht he 45/70 idea though. Since your dealing with a pretty low speed limit if you want maximum suppression the more bullet weight you can get the better.

I thought the same thing until I saw a video of a guy shooting a .308 Remington 700 suppressed with subsonic ammunition...the muzzle report was as loud as a mouse fart, and the loudest noise was the bullet hitting the steel plat and him working the bolt.

There was a company that was modifiying Ruger 77/44 .44Mag rifles into silenced rifles using subsonic .44SPL rounds. Can't remember the company's name, but they were in SPECIAL WEAPONS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT or some such magazine. Don't see why that couldn't be applied to the Ruger 96's....

...but I want my 96 in .357Mag first! :cuss:

Suppressed 45-70 yeah..why? Cause it's a heavy bullet and low velocity...500g at 1050 should be nice and quiet, and still 1000lb-ft energy.

I'll have one, one day.

Think I'll use a bolt receiver, though. Hell, I took two deer this year with a RR slug with similar ballistics...

Grab a Winchester M88 that feeds from a detachable box magazine so you can make use of spire point bullets.

Rechamber/rebarrel for something like a 338/08 so that you can use something like a 300grn Sierra MatchKing. The SMK would fly better at subsonic velocities than something like a 45/70 round. The M88 should manage some pretty decent accuracy as well as it appears to have a decent lock up with a conventional 2 lug rotating bolt head.

Ofcourse a BUNCH of people may hop up and down yelling and screaming at you for doing such a thing to an M88.

You really think a 500 grain won't be more "impactful" at 65 meters than 300 grainer? I understand the 300 .338 will be more streamlined, but I can't see it making up the power difference in less than 100 yards.

If it were a short range game then the fat 45 at 500 grains probably would be at an advantage though my thinking with the 300grn 338 would be that it likely would be able to retain hordes of velocity so that it could be useful at longer ranges as well.

Ever seen the comparision of a 240grn 44Mag load to that of a 240grn 300Whisper load, the 300Whisper holds an advantage at longer ranges thx to retained velocity. Probably would be somewhat similar with a 45/70 500grn bullet to that of a 338 300grn bullet.

If it can be done, Wild West will do it properly. I'm waiting to see what WildAlaska is hinting about...

I'm certain, if one went for longer ranges, a streamlined bullet would be better. I'm only interested in close range for this application- I'd like to make a fairly quiet load to carry around unsuppressed, and be able to use the same load, with suppressor, for home defense.

If you do a search over on snipershide.com, I believe one of their Scandinavian members did that (with great success) to a Marlin in one of those big "thumper" calibers.... check it out......

:what: :what: :what:
for home defense.
:what: :what: :what:

Are you kidding?

I was right with you guys untill you said this.

You want to use a *500GRAIN SLUG* at 1,000fps for HOME DEFENSE?!

I hope to god you have absolutely no neighbors for 2 miles in every direction, and that you live alone.

Otherwise, I couldn't imagine a much worse HD round.

Now, a suppressed M4 firing .223 would be a great HD weapon, quiet so you don't deafen yourself, penetrates less than 9mm handgun, and carries 1200lb/ft of muzzle energy.

Something very dichoctomous I missed here = "It has a repeat shot capability (pretty rapid) and if you shoot once and that's all you need, ....

HUH?

Likey your target is "under the umbrella" of the action noise anyway, & if you've smoked 'im anyway, what's the diff?

That's #1 = "all you need." Agreed, with stated conditions.

But, unless some ancillary persons = very likey, & still, if they're in the "envelope," they're not gonna hear the action cycling, & if so, a semi will be quicker (& "buried") better than a (slower - depending) pump, lever, anything manual action (other than a way quiet & purposeful bolt action - purely for steath. Still, anyone getting tagged will most likely make everyone else in the area take a bit of a "stay put" posture.

For all pratical purposes, any action's noise will be covered by the noise of the impact & action by 1) the impact (first) & then by the 2) report - if you synch it all. & yup, one shot is all that it should take, but at what range? Matters.

#2 is detection.

May be that at a distance that one could work a lever, bolt, whatever, but the thing is to remain totally undectected - forevermore = literally forever, & to escape the area & never have been there at all.

If "extras" in the area, they will hear your cycling unless buried in the report's noise.

Besides any actions you may take to cycle he action itself.

Minimal everything.

I have been thinking about the same thing.

Except in .357. Won't give the same thump as a 45-70.

However, I was looking into doing it since I think I could use the same suppressor for a 9mm and the .357
Just would give me more to use the suppressor on, not into all that hassle for only 1 gun.
