I have an SVT40 drilled and tapped on the side of the receiver for a scope mount. I think I picked it up for 500 a couple of years ago. I'm thinking of selling it and finding one that hasn't been altered. It functions fine, and it has the typical surplus stock, dings and dents.

Could it worth more than the 500 I paid?

Last I saw the SVT-40s were going for around $900 in mechanically good condition (that is, good bore). Some of them were drilled and tapped for a scope mount during World War II (the sniper variant; supposedly they were very accurate), so yours may actually be an original which would make it worth more. The fact that it's on the side, rather than on top, makes me think it is, or at least a close equivalent of some sort. I'd love to find one for $500.

Some people fitted them with an SVD-style rail, which is somewhat forgiveable. The SVT-40 was honestly years ahead of its time. Detachable box magazine and an integral muzzle brake, combined with a fairly lightweight and accurate rifle. It basically was an M-14, but 15 years early. They're beautiful rifles, too, and often have excellent wood stocks.

+1

AND to my knowledge, are the first to have a fluted chamber (at least in the neck and shoulder area).

I hope it's an original scope mount, sporterizing an SVT is blasphemy.
drilled and tapped sure does not sound original. Still... People here in the states are willing to pay big bucks for an SVT-40. I saw three at a gunshow early this year with no magazines for $699 and up they were gone the first day. I got mine last year for $225 still in the cosmoline, sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.

I remember when they came into the country in the 90's. Could get them for $250, but the word around the campfire was that they would blow up. Wish I had questioned that word around the campfire a bit more closely! Would have picked up a few!

Oh well.
