I'm looking at a bubba'd M96, and for some reason, the cock on close requires a lot of force. Is there a known cure for this? It's much harder than my stock milsurp.

OP has another M96 in standard trim that closes much easier. I would be a bit worried that other mods had been done. Does the bolt number match the receiver? Any signs of grinding on the camming surface? Has striker spring been replaced or adjusted too tight? Clean and lube, yes, but this sounds like more than that. Does it make a difference if there is a round in the chamber? Is the round coming out of the magazine going under the extractor hook OK? These actions are usually pretty slick.

The gun is at the LGS, so the info I have is from handling it with a trigger lock in place.

The workmanship on the mods done to it leads me to believe that there may be modifications with unintended consequences. So after thinking about it, it's a very risky project that I'm not going to take on.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful comments.

Maybe someone put in an extra power mainspring. Wolff sells M96 mainsprings that were probably taken off truck suspensions

look familiar?

Cock on closing takes more effort to close and you have to get used to accelerating and then pushing the bolt forward and down. I do not consider cock on closing to be bad, it does make extraction of a sticking cartridge easier. It also allowed a very strong mainspring which ensured reliable ignition under all conditions. And I think that is the reason Mauser, Lee, used that feature.

Receiver, floorplate and bolt match. I think Slamfire probably nailed it...stronger spring to reduce lockup time or something. The suspension spring on the other side of that vehicle may have been parted out and put in the bolt.

Anyway, I've decided not to buy it. Too many unknowns.
