This was basically a 3-gun match minus the shotgun. I finally got the chance to run the Hopco USA micro red dot mount (with Burris Fastfire II) in competition Saturday. I must say I was favorably impressed with the setup, particularly for close/instinctive shooting. I shot all of the close paper clean or close to it (minus a few dead non-threats LOL ) but I had never got the chance to sight in my optic at distance so missed most of the longer shots on steel. By the end of the day I was so tired and running out of ammo I just took a couple shots and moved on. Hopefully next time I'll be able to get the red dot sighted in and hit the long steel. I have always done better on those with irons; last time with my Mini-14 Ranch Rifle and irons I think I only missed once. Which was surprising.

I also didn't get the chance to figure out why this particular M1 sometimes closes the bolt on an empty chamber on the 7th or 8th round. I should have swapped some guts around with my other garands but didn't have time.

I shot in the "Heavy Metal Irons" division (starting with this match UDPL is standardizing to the "3 gun nation" classes and rules) which allows the use of a non-magnified optic on your rifle. Handgun was my Dan Wesson Razorback Heritage .45, which didn't particularly like my older-profile LSWC reloads much, but ran perfectly on berry's plated and LRN and factory ball. It was really my fault for trying to cheap out. Lots of fun.

LOL it is kind of a pain in this case. I'm actually right handed but strongly left-eye dominant so I shoot long guns lefty, handguns righty.

Results are out... I placed first in my division!

*cough* (there was no one else in my division) :D

But I beat a third of the guys in Open division, roughly half the guys in Tactical Irons, and half in Tactical Scope. So there must have been a lot of slow dudes out there. LOL

My overall time was almost exactly double the time of the match winner.

Didja have fun? That's what really counts!! I'm 64 and can't run as fast or react as fast as the 18 to 30 year olds. But dam I have fun!! That's why I shoot all the different games I can get to. Cowboy Action, 3 gun, ruger rimfire, 2 gun, Hi-Power, bullseye you name I'll try to shoot it.

Did I say DAM IT'S FUN!!!

Heck yeah! :D

Only thing that wasn't fun was policing all the .30-06 brass and clips. Maybe if I got a quarter every time I did a deep knee bend at home I'd do them more often! LOL

Good call on the non-threat target. If they really weren’t a threat, they would have hit the deck long before then. Well-disciplined threat IMO.

Wahooo... your video is great.

After a 3-gun with lightweight everything I am completely worn out. With the heavy iron you were using, I would need CPR.

Yeah I was pretty tired by the last stage. I was talking to my buddies how much greater appreciation I have for those 17-20 year old dudes humping 50 lb packs and 12 lb rifles through Bastogne and everywhere. Amazing.

I also noted how much space even empty .30-06 BRASS takes up, and weighs, compared to 5.56.

Another humorous aside; I'd grabbed a bunch of loaded clips out of one of my bags, and didn't look at it closely before blasting it all. Turns out I went through about 80 rounds of LC63 MATCH ammo before I noticed. Oh well... :D

A long time ago I took my tanker M1 to an IPSC rifle match...took 2nd out of 8 with iron sights, and 7th out of 19 overall. I think that was the most fun I've ever had at a match. :)

(the silhouette was supposed to be the shooting window, but my muzzle brake blew it off)
