Tales from the Kilt

Years ago, I was piper to the 2nd Infantry Division. At Christmas, we were visited by the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. I piped them (and their escorts) over the stone bridge to the General's mess.

A friend of mine, sitting with the girl he was escorting and several other cheerleaders and escorts, called me over to their table.

"She has a question for you."

After some blushing and giggling, she asked me, "What do you wear under the kilts?"

I told her the truth: "Th' barbarous Scots wear nothin' atall under th' kilt. Sure and we Irish are more civilized! We wear th' same t'ing, but we tie a knot in it to keep it from dhraggin' th' ground."

Only ONE knot???

The clan tartans are a relatively new concept, being established after most of the old Highland culture had already been destroyed. (research: "tartanist/ism")

So one could probably wear whatever colors they were comfortable with.

As far as weapons, I can't imagine wearing a "kilt" without some sort of sword ;)

A snubbie in the sporan would be handy too :D

I wear a kilt regularly (Church, fun, you name it), have worn one for 13 years now. I don't have a utilikilt but a standard 8 yards of wool pleated to set. No shots of me in mine, but here's my son in his.

As to colors, yes, most tartans are a Victorian invention, done after the suppression of the Scots after Proscription was passed. However, as tartans have meaning these days, there is no particular reason for a McDonald to wear Campbell colors merely because they like the color. It isn't wrong, per se, but odd all the same. I actually chose Black Watch because the Riddles have no official tartan being a small family and though I am McDonald, McDuffy, and others, I preferred Black Watch. That, you see, falls within the arguments against being picky of tartans, but also is a statement that I chose a tartan that belonged to no clan (or Clan Society in the US).

owned an olive one for three years

I just got back from my honeymoon. We did Vancouver/Victoria/Seattle over the course of ten days. We happened upon the only Utilikilt outlet in downtown Seattle. Of course we had to go in. A pretty little salesgal had me drop trou and wrapped me up in a survival kilt. Their concept of survival is holding twenty bottles of beer. I balked at the price and settled for a Khaki standard model.
Pretty girls can sell cars, beer, guns and now kilts.

i have my great great grand-fathers kilt, its about 100 years old, ive never worn it but i plan on getting married in it. ive been wanting to get one for general wear but havent been able to pony up the cash. i have done a lot of research on my family clan (Grant), i am most likely going to buy the Black Watch (family hunting tartan) since its easier come by than the other pattern (1860 sett)

The Utiliklit was recently featured on Cool Tools on the DIY channel. I thought the modesty snap was a good idea.

LOL a bunch of grown men talking about wear funny looking dresses:evil::neener: just kidding to all I have friends who do partake in this event but my scottish heritage isnt the strongest.:D

I can't find it now, but there WAS at least one kilt manufacturer (in the Northwest, I believe) that was offering an IWB holster attachment on their kilts. I'm also a kilt fan, and now have 7 or 8, most of them Utilikilts.

I can't imagine the looks i'd get wearing one of those in Oklahoma. I want one, but i'm not sure i'm ready to deal with the comments. I also have little to no scottish background, to my knowledge.

A joke, there, a joke - though an inside one directed to a lurker.

My grandfather saw photographs of Ireland in a book and decided he would not want to live there because there were no trees.

How about this, then...

Not all of us left, just the sober ones!

By the way, I wear my kilt (as does my son) in south Mississippi with nary a problem. Sometimes there are looks, but never a problem.

Nah, they can handle their brew!

Though in fairness, I enjoyed O'Flahertey's in New Orleans before he left after Katrina, and Irish pipes are nice to listen to.

Actually, I love the Irish brethren in the spirit of the Gallogloch!

If you ever read the history of the Great Eastern (the "jinxed" liner that wound up being used to lay the first Trans-Atlantic cable), they make mention of a mysterious gentleman.

The cable was manufactured on board -- the holds were full of wire and sheathing. And the cable kept failing. Every time, they'd fish it up and find a piece of wire driven through the sheathing. Although it was later proven that it was flaw in the machinery that caused that, at first they suspected "an Irish nationalist."

His name was John Francis Clooney, and he was me great-grand dad.:p

He also was a Fennian, and collected money for the raid on Australia to rescue the Fennian prisoners. The captain of the Catalpa, the ship that carried out the raid, was George Anthony -- a relative on the other side of the family.

Talking about ships and such, wasn't there another big boat made in Ireland? Didn't have some, er, trouble???

In any case, that's cool history - something tangible!

Tacticality aside, I don't think I'm man enough to wear a kilt.
Yez don't understand the Gael.

Me granddad was a thrifle nervous at th' dintist. So th' dintist says, "Misther Clooney, I've some special mouthwash for yez" and he give him a tot of Irish whiskey.

An' th' auld fella says, "That's good. could I have a drop more?"

So he give him another tot. Then he says, "Are yez ready for me now?"

And the auld fella says, "I'd like to see the man who'd touch me teeth now!":D

The Titanic.

The Great Eastern was supposedly cursed. And when she was broken up, they found a skeleton in one of the voids -- a boy, used to buck rivits who somehow got sealed in and died there.
