I guess if you can afford to go to Africa and hunt big game, you can afford the ammo!! I did a Google search, and this is apparently a good price too!
I'll never whine about .308 again :uhoh:

People wonder if you can save money reloading...

If you shoot 470 Nitro Express...the answer is a resounding YES!

Most of the people I know who use this stuff could care less about the cost or what it takes to get to where it is appropriately used. No big deal for them. Way too big a deal for me.

I think using 20$ bills as the wad in a shotgun shell would be more fun. Maybe :D

Anyone want to do a group buy on this ammo? :p

Group buy sounds good to me! Count me in for 1 cartridge, it'll go nice in the rest of my cartridge collection.

I'll also do all the other African double rifle cartridges if 19 other people could join me. Just one a month. We can make it the "Cartridge of the Month Club." Of course the person that keeps the box must pay a premium, like say they pay shipping.

You want the best for dangerous game you pay for it - development costs, machinery, export/shipping expenses from Australia, retailer mark-up, etc.

www.woodleighbullets.com.au/History3.html

"Production started on a single hydraulic press. The bullets were hand made one bullet, one process at a time. Few people today realise how many processes there are involved in making a jacketed bullet. A soft nose bullet jacket can take up to 4 draws then you have to make the core and form the bullet shape which can add another 8-10 processes. A very time consuming and lengthy procedure. Production runs of 1000 in one calibre in the early days were a big order.

Weldcore technology was established in 1988, which vastly improved the weight retention and reliability of the soft nose bullets.

Gradually automated machinery has been purchased as demand for our product increased and our range of bullets increased.

Full Metal Jacket bullet development began in 1983. The jacket was first made with 1.6mm brass, then 1.6mm clad steel, then progressed to 2mm thick (0.080") custom made deep drawing grade clad steel strip. The cladding was gilding metal both sides.

Today we are the only company in the world making a comprehensive range of steel jacketed bullets for dangerous game hunting.

Our first export was in 1985. Due to the small Australian market today most of our production is exported to USA, Germany, England, Sweden, Norway, South Africa, Italy, New Zealand, Denmark, and Zimbabwe."

Hardly crazy considering what you are buying. You are looking at ammo that is not going to get shot up like .22lr wally world specials, and will most likely be counted on to keep you hide from becoming an ornament on the horns of a cape buffalo. Now, does 200 and some odd dollars still sound expensive?

If you've got enough money to hunt in Africa, you've got enough money to buy the ammo. Would you rather take it from the rear on ammo prices, or take it from the rear from something that would consider you lunch?

Aww, how cute. Someone just priced exotic cartridges for the first time.

Yep! Never had a need to, just MidwayUSA thought I might want some since they sent me the e-mail. Guess they would have looked at my past purchases and realized I was a "Beer Budget" kind of guy, huh??

Maybe they were hoping you'd add the rifle it to your Christmas list once you saw how affordable the ammo was. :)

I know how much exotic ammo costs. Personally I don't think your getting much ftlbs of energy out of that ammo for your money. I bet you could get .577 t-rex or 700nitro for close to the same, both of which are way more powerful. Hell with a hot loaded 3.5 slug I can push almost 4k at the muzzle.

just go buy a barrett for the next safari and be done with it

That kinda price, still YIKES.
I can think of a lot of effective rounds that will keep my buttocks AND my wallet in one piece. Whew.

But, maybe all ammo will be that price once THE ONE is finished "reasonably regulating" things.:neener:

I would like to see someone use that whole box in one session shooting from the prone position. Not me someone else. I would bet that box would be a lifetime supply for me.

What I don't quite understand, is why is the 50bmg not used for dangerous game? I realize the crazy barrel lengths, extreme gun weight, and ammo availability problems in africa might be an issue. Then again I wouldn't want to touch a round off in a 12 pound 20" barrel 50bmg with iron sights when standing up. Thank god T-rexs and even bigger animals aren't alive anymore
