I have always had a desire to own a M1 Carbine, but always put off the purchase of one for something else. Well watching Saving Private Ryan the other night on T.V renewed my desire to own one of these little gems. A local shop has a decent looking Winchester on the rack for $650 I noticed the other day while picking up another gun. Cabellas seems to have good deals on cheap ammo for this rifle.

So is there any reason to not own one? I have always been a AR guy, but hey the M1 Carbine was the AR of its day right?

Okay, I'll do what you asked. Don't buy it. Its made of wood, which can rot, and metal, which can rust. Save your money and buy ice cream with it. $650 worth of ice cream will go a long way. Just kidding.

Personally, if I had the money laying arournd for it, I'd buy it.

Don't do it. Save your money for a Garand.

Got one of those? Oh. Okay. Get the carbine.

(mumbles while taking cover in my nomex tent) Never much cared for Garands :uhoh: . There is just little appeal in them to me. Although the silly prices they fetch today may also be a part of that. I have my Grandfathers M1911 he carried in N.Africa and would like a rifle (er um long arm) to match. While I would really love a Thompson stupid Illinois laws would require one of them goofy looking 16" deals :( . So the M1 Carbine seems like the best C.O.A.

It's only Money. You'll make more.

Sounds like a great deal for a Winchester. On Gunbroker they go for a lot more than that. The CMP price is pretty close to that. I'd buy it. You won't lose money on it. I'd get a book about them and educate yourself at the same time. They ARE pretty useless little rifles, except for home defense and noise making, but very historical.

I shot a doetag with a Standard Products M1 carbine last year. I've got a few carbines and Garands as well, plus a P17, 1903, et, et.

Get it. You can't have too many interesting guns.

I say get the carbine you have to start somewhere.

For those of you that don't know the CMP is selling M1 Carbines now. i do believe for about $495 still soaked in cosmoline. once i get my Affiliated Organization card before i can order mine. of course it is luck of the draw what you get. just a thought

still soaked in cosmoline

None on the Underwood that I received last month. Just a touch of grease on the safety. The wood was kind of beat up, but the finish on the metal parts was great. Only slight wear on the top of the front sight ears and the bayonet lug. Winchesters go on sale in January for $675 plus shipping.

You are in the wrong place to have guys/gals talk you out of buying a gun...especially an American classic. HAHA, go talk to a Democrat and maybe they can talk you out of it. :)

(just playing around, I dont want to hurt any ones feelings)

Can't. I have my grandfather's Inland, it is my wife's primary HD rifle. I would very much like to buy a second just like it to remove the risk of it winding up in an evidence locker post incident. (Although I'm sure my grandfather would be thrilled it saved a life first.)

No, don't buy one. Buy two.
