I have been debating on getting a vest for the times when I want to conceal a OWB holster or shoulder holster. I like the vest idea because I could wear it outside, but also go into a store or resturant without the need to take it off as I would do with a jacket, which would allow me to continue to coneal the weapon. I often wear long over sized button down shirts, but they are a bit messy looking. I havent settled on what type of vest I would use, probably nothing that looked like the standard tac/camera vest.

Anyway, my main question is even though I am 5'9" and wear a standard L or XL, I was debating getting a tall size vest so that it would be longer, thus helping to conceal a holster better. I have absolutely no experience with this and a regular vest may work just fine. I have to order the vest from Cabelas (I have a gift certificate) so I wont be able to try anything on in the store.
Any recommendations on sizing or styels would be appreciated!

I'm 6'3" and have the same problem.

1. Concealed Carry Clothiers (concealedcarry.com) will make their vests longer for a few extra dollars. The one I have from them is not extra long; when I ordered it I didn't know they made them longer. The classic is very nice looking, looks like a traditional men's vest, and you can get it in navy and black as well as the usual tan. The regular length will conceal IWB ok, but not if you bend over. It really needs to be at least two inches longer for me.

2. Some outdoor companies like l.l.bean etc. make fleece vests in tall sizes, which are fine for the winter. In fact, fleece vests are great concealment garments because of the thick fabric and the fact that if it's cold enough to wear them, lots of folks are wearing them. Cabelas may have some of these.

3. Out of frustration I bought two cheap nylon vests at a local college bookstore ($10.00 apiece) and paid a seamstress to add the bottom five inches of one vest to the bottom of the other vest. She matched up all the lines, and it looks ok, though slightly weird because there are two sets of pockets. Plus, the logo from the local college makes it blend in.

4. The Cabela's photographer and safari vests will not work for tall people. Ditto for the Carhartt work vests, which come in tall sizes but are still way too short to conceal a gun well.

5. In the current Cabela's catalog there a "roughneck utility vest" which comes in tall sizes. According to their sizing guide, "tall" means 2" extra in the body, so maybe that would do it. I don't have one. If you emailed them or phoned them they could probably tell you exactly how many inches long it is. I'm sitting here with the catalog, and it's number 98-0083.

6. One way of disguising what you're doing just occurred to me when I was writing # 3: put some kind of logo on a vest, and people will assume you are required to wear it on the job!

Personally.. I just can't see myself wearing a vest .. ever.. EVER. I tend to carry as stated in the original post, i.e. in long button down shirts untucked, over OWB. If you're wearing traditional business style shirts, it may look a bit messy. The secret trick is this.. it doesn't look messy if it was designed to be worn that way. I can't believe I'm saying this .. but it's true. What you might want to look into is more fashionable designer shirts, intended more for say.. a "club going" type of button down, or 'metro' as it were. Then you can carry and be fashionable. I might get flamed for this... but really now, you're profile says you're 28 .. you don't want to be a guy in a vest.:D
