I just won a Taurus PT58 on an auction. I have a couple questions?
1. Does anyone know of any aftermarket grips?
2. Will grips for a Browning BDA/Beretta 84 fit?
3. Anyone with experience with this gun, good/bad?
3. Any good source for extra magazines?

Thanks

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's a pretty big pistol for a 380. I remember shooting one a few times...smallish sights, okay trigger, okay accuracy perfectly reliable. Now, it has been a long time since I last saw a sample of this 380 so I don't recall accessory availability

Had two, traded the blue one (the one I used for shooting) for a new purchase, kept the nickel one (NIB) to match my PT99AF, also in nickel. Did have an FTF with the blue one on rare occassions with Blazer aluminum cased ammo but otherwise reliable. As noted, a bit fat for a .380 ACP but it was comfortable. Very slightly smaller than a PT92/99 Compact.

CDNN has new factory 12 round mags. http://www.cdnninvestments.com/tapt312blman.html

it's very big for a .380 (it has a locked breach), just get a Beretta .380 (straight blowback and smaller).

the Taurus 58 exists because of the latin american gun laws, i'm not saying it's a bad gun, but that's it's niche.

it might be interesting to handload some really hot .380 though.

OTOMIK SAID; "it's very big for a .380 (it has a locked breach), just get a Beretta .380 (straight blowback and smaller)."

I don't think there's a locked breech here. The Taurus pt58 is a direct clone (or as close as possible) to the Beretta 80 series and the pt58 is also a blowback action, as they are.

Sorry I'm not a Taurus fan so not much help on aftermarket stuff...CDNN as already mentioned. If it is half as good a gun as the Berettas it is copied from, it's a keeper. Good luck.

Actually, I seem to remember that the PT58 reall IS a locked breach pistol. As I remember, recoil was light. The current models PT138 and PT132 ARE locked breach.

I went shooting with a bunch of people a few years back. One of them had a PT58 and offered to let me shoot it. I loaded up two 12rd mags and shot the first slow fire at 15 yards. Everything when into the 10 ring, but fine precision seemed difficult. I shot the second mag rapid fire with exactly the same results, which really surprised me. Seems to be good platform for SD.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies, does anyone know a source for aftermarket grips, preferably rubber, and 12 rd magazines, preferably stainless or nickle? The gun is a nickle finished gun.

Although appearing quite similar to the larger PT92/99 (and other Beretta 92 copies), usp9 is correct. The PT58s is, indeed, simple blowback.

The PT138 and 132 are entirely different designs.

The nickel finishes are no longered offered today by Taurus (as far as I know). The main reason is that they are not as durable as other current offerings. I had one instance where a small flake of nickel came off of my PT99AF at the ejection area but the electroplated nickel is thick enough to not go all the way to the base metal. This is my gun in one area, however, so others may have seen more wear than mine. Overall, though, the areas where metal rubs against metal during cycling have held up well for me (I do not holster the gun, though, so there will be more wear when that is done).

Info on the PT-58 is thin on the ground, I spent some time looking up any details in the Taurus user manuals on their website. I found that the PT-58 while very similar doesn't have a locking block, so it is indeed straight blockback. I was misinformed and I just want to settle the issue so someone searching for info on the PT-58 gets the facts.

I've been wrong in the past for what I thought were sure things, make a post, and find out I'm wrong after I pull out and examine the guns in discussion. So for this thread, I ran down to my safe and pulled out my remaining PT58s just to be sure before posting. ;)

New PT58HC!

Taurus PT58..I had a couple of the what I will call the first gen. PT58 and I just got 2 second gen. 58HC.(they actualy stopped making the PT58 for a little while.I got a blue one for my wife and I opted for the stainless.

The first gen was a good pistol, however the new one seems like a custom version of the old one. It has a 19 round mag. (yes 19).Performed excellent at the shooting range, I returned the 25 yard rapid fire target with 5 three shot groups on less than 5" x 5" square, and I still had 4 shots left. (and this is out of the box, non adj. sights) first box of ammo!

The gun is a little big, but for those of us with big hands it is not a problem. and my wife seems to like it also and she is little. Recoil is light and it is not loud. These are the reasons I am a .380 fan for self defense.(I do not recommend shooting without hearing protection, but face it Mr. bad guy will not wait for you to put in ear plugs, or wait because you are afraid to pull the trigger.) and remember if you can not engage your target due to recoil you might as well throw rocks.

I found the perfect leather CC holster, it is a G Code G-A001, fits like a glove. I will confirm and post a web address re: the holster.

i had an old pt58 i loved that gun i got it right when the ban started and had one 13 round mag with it it was a great gun i still kick myself for letting it go yes it was big for 380 but there was no recoil and it was as reliable as a sig226 i had at the time i carried it on alot of fishing trips it was my always gun

Tomcat,

I am glad to hear your range report. I just bought 2 of the new HC models in stainless and haven't had the time to take them out to the range yet. They are a nice feeling gun aren't they?

You will love your new 58HCs, and I too love the first generation 58. Old reliable except for as mentioned above (Blazer Ammo) my 58 did not like them. But I alsoo would not waste my $$$ on blazer ammo anyway!

Here is the holster info I mentioned....The guys from wild bills concealment was at the gun show last week, he did not have a holster for the 58 as did no other vendor there, but he went throgh holsters for 30 minutes and a resounding eureka produced a glove fit in the G Code G-A001, this holster is for a Walther P-99. Nice CC item hugs your side even with the thick PT58HC & a 19 round mag. Website" www.wildbillsconcealment.com Lots of nice stuff!

I am sure that the Range results will even get better with a few more boxes of ammo. I also am hearing incredible reviews on the new PT 1911 45 auto..Outof the box tack driver! I am planning this purchase soon (around $600-$700)They have a pachmeyer style grip with a laser in it it is sweet...I have also emailed Taurus regarding this grip for the PT58!

Funny you should mention this. I bought one of these also. I am waiting for my club membership to be approved so I can do some serious shootin so it's still a virgin.

JKwas,

The PT58 & PT58HC look just alike and are not kin to the cheaper milleniums. Go to Taurus web site and you should be able to see all of them.
The 58,s are more of a medium frame, like holdng a full size PT99 or Baretta 92 It is like a compact version of these pistols.

Precobd, A gun show is a great place for extra clips for your first generation 58 and you have won a terriffic firearm. Use good ammo! and remenber....cheap ammo is cheap ammo! What you qualify with is what you should use and what you use is what to qualify with. If you want Hydra shock ...then qualify with Hydra shock. Your firearm will shoot differently with different ammo. I suggest buying a few boxes, different brands and do some real honest testing with them. Find the best performer for you and your firearm and stay with it.

Taurus sells Mags for the PT58 but they are on the expensive side and only 10 rounds instead of 12.

Most of my usual online sources don't seem to have them except for CheaperThanDirt.com http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/31338-18704-1355.html but are currently Out Of Stock!

This site http://www.securityarms.com/20010315/galleryfiles/2400/2402.htm suggests that grips for the Beretta Model 84 Cheetah will fit the PT58.

Numrich has replacement parts available if needed, including grips. They aren't specific on what kind of grips they are offering though. http://www.e-gunparts.com/productschem.asp?chrMasterModel=2040zPT-58

I know this thread is old, but I'm interested in getting a Taurus P58 or P58HC.

Are those guns both the same physical size and weight? I know the P58 has the higher capacity clip, but how'd they do that? Did they make the P58HC a larger gun than the P58?

I notice that the 19 round mag of the 58HC stick out to a ridiculous extent, IMO. Are there any shorter mags that are either flush with gun but or have a little pinky grip kind of like a 7 round mag in a Bersa/Walther does? If such a shorter mag exists I'd love to get one because I don't need 19 rounds in a mag. So if a shorter grip exists that gives up 2 to 4 rounds, that'd be dandy for shortening the grip a bit.

Also, are these guns aluminum framed, or steel framed?

I've had some bad luck with 2 Taurus revolvers I've owned with regard to unpolished or poorly polished cylinder holes making some holes difficult to put a cartridge into. Are Taurus autos better than their revolvers?

P.S. - severe arthritis makes me recoil sensitive. So I'm thinking the PT58 or PT58HC might be a good low recoil .380 for me so I can step up in power from my Firestorm/Bersa .32 ACP. I like my Makarov .380 which is moderately heavy (good for reducing recoil) and comfortable with wrap around rubber grip. I'm thinking/hoping this PT58 or PT58HC might be a similar low recoil .380 experience, but with higher magazine capacity.

Please advise ASAP. I want to get one before Obama makes it impossible.

There were two generations of the original PT58. Both had 12 round magazines, and are interchangeable. The difference was that the second generation used the de-cocker function. The first generation was available blued and nickle-plated. The second gen. were blued or stainless.

I own a blued first generation PT58. Yes, it's a chunky little gun, but the wood grips add to the width. The second generation could be had with thinner plastic grips.

Mine has been quite accurate, and reliable. They are blow-back in operation, but the alloy frame is substantial enough to render the recoil quite pleasant.

The 58HC isn't designed to use lower capacity magazines, IIRC.
