I am pretty sure it was here in BP shooting that I read where Taylors ( I am pretty sure) was offering .36 caliber,1851 Navy with a brass frame for $160.00 plus an extra cylinder! Does anyone know about this, is it Taylors for sure and can a link be provided? I typed in Taylors Firearms and didn't see anything about a deal like that.

Figures...I was planning on ordering one, or 2. Pretty good price for it. Thanks for the info :)

Currently,

You can purchase, from Dixie Gun Works, (DGW) a brass framed 1851 36 caliber Navy for $199.65...

Or

Alternatively, you can buy the EXACT SAME PIETTA PISTOL, in the Confederate 44 Cal. version from Cabela's Sporting Goods for $169.99, either in the 7-1/2" Barrel, or, the 5-1/2" "Sherrifs" barrel model.

Neither Dixie or Cabela's offers a freebie spare cylinder with these pistols, but, Cabela's prices on spare cylinders are a great deal more affordable than Dixie is, Comming in at $49.95 at Cabela's as opposed to $75.00 at Dixie.

I hope this was helpful.

1851 for sale

Hi,
The info was helpful, thanks! I was primarily interested in a 1851 Navy .36...brass mostly because it was cheaper and from what I have been reading more durable that the .44 as the brass frame isn't pounded as hard. I went to the links and saw a Pietta Griswold and Gunnison brass for $179.00 That's an ok price for me. But what is the difference between the 1851 Navy .36 and the Griswold Gunnison .36. I'm thinking it is probably purely historical. I did notice no Navy engraving on the cylinder, could that be the only difference? Thanks again!

I am not the worlds greatest expert in the different models out there, except for the basic ones, like a Colt navy versus a Remington new army, or a walker versus dragoon... etcetera.

I really am not familiar with a Griswold Gunnison model at all, but, there is a tendency, amongst the Itallian reproduction gun makers, to come up with somewhat "fictionalized" models, that, actually were never really used at all. For example, an 1851 Colt Navy, was, by definition a 36 Caliber Brass framed pistol, in the old days... But today, you will find, steel framed 44 caliber versions all over the place !!! LOL !!!

Some of these are actually historical representations of not very commonly made or used guns, and some of it, is marketing, by the manufacturers, to sell more guns...

Perhaps another member here is more informed on the Griswold Gunnison model than I am.

Sincerely,

ElvinWarrior... aka... David, "EW"

I just looked up Griswold and Gunnison. They were Confederate manufacturers of their version of the Colt Navy. They were almost the same except it had a round barrel, cheaper material as in the use of brass, not quite as good a quality as Colt but good considering. They were expensive for the time too...$40.00 a piece as opposed to Colt at $13.50!
