Watched this one last night. There was a lot of CQB action with handguns, suppressed and unsuppressed, including in situations where it appeared that carbines would have been more effective against soldiers who might have been wearing at least minimal body armor. How realistic was that? Any SEALS out there? Were those SIGs they were carrying?

One of them had a Sig Classic, another looked like he had a Beretta 92. The rest had H&K MK23s. Pretty neat movie... except the scene with the guy running around with the slide partially locked back on his pistol. Their military technical advisor shoulda caught that and fixed it.

I was pretty dissappointed in this movie and thought it was pretty melodramatic and unrealistic.

They were mostly using H&K Mark 23s, but the Corpsman had a SIG P226.

I won't comment on realism, as i've never been in combat, and hate playing Armchair Quarterback.

As for the handguns/carbines thing. I don't recall the SEALs going up against anyone that was wearing body armor, so that would not have been an issue.

Yes, but it was a good story with a moral lesson. That and it has Monica in it who is a special kind of hottness that could very well change a Navy SEAL mission or launch a thousand ships depending on the situation. Bruce and his gang did a great job of acting... but the direction was poor and I don't think there were any Military Advisors. If there were - then they need to drop and give me 50!

I saw the teaser for it and was wondering if it was any good. I wouldn't expect it to rise to the level of BHD, but is it at least better than Windtalkers or Thin Red Line?

Is it worth picking up?

The Thin Red Line is one of my favorite war movies (The Beast being the other) as it pertty much nails alot of the emotions and interplays that go on between troops............. but I do understand how most folks found it boring and slow.

A DVD of Tears of the Sun will make its way iinto my player here soon. I won't be expecting much but it should be fun to watch action/effects wise.

Now Windtalkers on the other hand was perhaps the worst I have ever had the displeasure of watching 1/2 of!! I though Peral Harbor would be the low point of History insulting war movies, but alas I was wrong.

...............hopefully Windtalkers will be the bottom!!

sorry

.....I'm thinkng about contacting Disney about a 'non History-insulting, MAN'S version' of their Peral Harbor movie, it should run about 20 minutes and make several million dollars!!

I think some of the action in 'Tears' was ok.

The way they reacted to the ambush by using bounding overwatch to take the fight to the enemy was a textbook reaction to a close-in ambush. Most movies show the ambushed just laying down and throwing lead in the general vicinity of the ambushers. That's rarely going to be sufficient to dislodge an enemy who generally has the advantages of surprise and better ground on their side. Especially if the enemy has any kind of training and resolve.

One of the things that bothered me was the extremely quick reaction of the F/A-18's. The SEAL squad came into contact, and while reacting to it, they call for a CAS (Close Air Support) mission. The carrier launches a pair of F/A-18's to respond. Now, the carrier apparently is outside of the Nigerian national waters, at least 20 miles from the coast. Even if they immediately hit full military throttle, it would take them a considerable amount of time to make it to the SEAL's position. Then it would take another couple minutes to make a flyover the terrain for familiarization. I don't think they'd be as responsive as the movie let on. Of course, it is Hollywierd.

Movie would have been better if that had shot whats her name the minute she copped an attitude. What an annoying character.

-No, you don't stand on the flight deck and talk on you sat phone during flight ops.

-Short of levitation by directed urination there is no way that a SH-60B (LAMPS ASW variant)will lift as many people as it did in the first pick-up scenes. No room and all the cool gear inside weighs a ton.

- I did not know that a couple of F-18s with HARM missiles on the stations could inflict so much fiery damage.

-Come to think of it, I did not know a F-18 with one external fuel tank could make it that far without hitting a tanker.

All jokes aside, that movie looks like Disney animation compared to what goes on in Africa every day. Nobody gave the least bit of a damn when .5 million people were killed by machete in Rwanda. Liberia is going further down the tubes, Congo enuff said.
That will all look like fun and games if the tensions between the muslim north and christian south of Nigeria boil over. That is the best excuse for a functional regional power and those two internal groups really don't like each other. Ask a Nigerian sometime, description of the other side will probably involve a lot of spitting.

I thought the movie was bullcrap...

I've known a few SEALs... one, in fact, still runs NAVRESCEN Lexington, KY if I'm not mistaken.....

While they got teh bounding over watch mostly right, the last gun battle scene with them all lined up was definitely not normal procedure... the peel-out would have begun MUCH sooner...

All in all, while it was technically flawed in some aspects, if your girlfriend balks at the typical war movie, this might tug a heart string or two

I watched it for the first(and last) time two days ago and thought it was crap. The whole last scene bothered me bad. They are like 1 mile from the border and they are just standing around. WHat is that crap. They know these people are right behinjd them and they are just dilly dallying. Come on! I dint like it except for a few cool death scenes.

At 15 miles a minute, not necessarily.

Handguns?????

Tactics????????

What?????????

Monica was worth the price of the ticket. Loved her in the Matrix:Reloaded also. She covered up the holes in that movie too.

Picked up the DVD today. During the part where they're clearing that village how come everyone has suppressed weapons and that one guy has a Sig out with no silencer? Me and my buddy from work caught the slide locked back on that one gun, too.

Did you know she was one of the vampires in Bram Stoker's Dracula? So she Kissed Neo before... Little trivia for ya.

THE BEAST was an awsome flick. I've not seen it in a long time, but it was very good. Worth renting for sure. Is it on DVD now?
How is the commentary special features? Seeing those tanks lined up, firing on the move... awesome.

I found my copy at Wal-Mart, on their $5.88 rack. No commentary, though.

THE BEAST rocks!!!

no commentary though as it is an old movie

All filmed in Isreal with their equipment.......... be it captured (and 'improved' as you will note the US 105mm main guns on the captured ex-commie T-55s) or stuff they bought........... with lots of wide open spaces for live fire and things that go BOOM!! Real RPG shots and live heavy (HEAVY) artillery in the opening seq.

a friggin fantastic movie and a MUST have for DVD/viedo collectors

I just saw the movie and I was dissapointed also. I give it a 6 out of 10. I would give Black Hawk Down a 9 1/2. MUCH better movie that doesn't try to play to your emotions as much yet brings you into the action much better and I really felt something for the men in Black Hawk Down. I really didn't care about anyone in Tears of the Sun. The Soldiers were wooden and the rest of the people were just dead weight.

I have a question. Why did one of the soldiers have an AK-47 with him? It was slung on his back from the start. Makes no sense to me.

maybe to use it to cause confusion if necessar? the AK chatter is distinct and may make an enemy think it's friendly force or something else.
