I recently found one for $370 from an online dealer and would like some information on it.
It is one of the German Surplus P6 versions.
After a few searches around the High Road, it appears to have an almost cult following.
So here are my questions:
1. How does this compare to other SIGs such as the P228 and P229?
2. This is an older Sig design so if I need repairs or replacement parts how hard would it be?
3. The usual rundown: reliability, accuracy, known issues, trigger, weird controls etc.

Thank you in advance.

i was considering the same pistol,as sold by CDNN. i posted a similar question , and received a few answers.as i recall, there were no warnings or anything, some folks suggested changing the springs out. try using the search function, there'll be a little more info somehwere.......

it was one of the best pistols Sig/Sauer ever made, i wish they would never have dropped it.:cuss: but being an 8 shot instead of a 15 like the 226 it got the short end of the deal.

Here's what I know.

- It's a SIG.
- It's a SIG in generally very good condition for less than $400.
- Slim grip, slightly larger than the 239, but smaller than 228/229.
- No DAK trigger available. :(

To me, it's a less expensive and larger version of the 239. Not a bad pistol, if you like SIGs, and worth it if you like single stack nines. I wouldn't pay any more than the $350-370 that I've seen them going for.

I sent you a PM, Jakk55. The only issue I have with mine is that every once in a while it throws a empty cartridge back towards your head instead of arching out to the left rear. But it is accurate and reliable. Most have a bit of holster wear. I actually found one with NO DISCERNIBLE holster wear. I understand that you can buy part kits with essential springs, levers, etc., should you ever need one. I suppose that these guns do wear out, but this one will be long after I wear out.

Back in the early to late '80s they were a very good gun. the only "issue" is the capacity of the magazine compared to the Glocks and other 9's that came out. Oh, the 225 was also expensive, as are most SIG's.

I probably will get one since I could not afford one when they were introduced.

Do they have any advantages over newer SIGs other than being half the price?

The 225 fits my hand better than any other pistol I've ever handled. I don't own one yet but it is on the list. I've never seen a single malfunction in the thousands of rounds fired through the four Sigs I own.

The 225 along with the S&W 3913 are probably the most underrated CCW guns on the market. I have both and love them!! Of course my 225 is an original one not the P6 variation. So IMHO go and get that one, you will be well served.

Two known issues are:

1) Long and heavy DA pull.
2) Possible reliability issues feeding hollowpoints.

Both can be fixed or improved upon.

Well, it is a very good firearm. If you want/need the higher capacity then a 226/228/229 is your gun. If you want a nice 9 shot 9x19 and the $$ is not an issue, go for it.

The cost of spare mags can be higher then current production guns which is a negative.

Most of the info so far has been right on.
The only thing I'll add is that you can get replacement parts very easily for it. The P6 is the German police version of the P225 that was sold here in the states for years. You can get everything that you might need including new in the wrapper plastic grips from Top Gun Supply. http://www.topgunsupply.com/
New mags are only $28.95
The long hard DA pull can be "fixed" with a lighter hammer spring.
If you do buy one, I'd get the Sig parts kit for the P225 for it and replace the springs. The parts kit is around $27.00 and comes with a new recoil spring, decocker lever spring, trigger bar spring, slide catch spring, 4 grips screws, and the two piece roll pins.

IIRC - Hokkmike has one that feeds hollow point ammo perfectly that he has or had for sale. You might want to look into that one since it seems to be a good one.

Check out the Sig thread link in my signature or do a search. There are many there who have P6s and there is some good info to be had.
Good luck!

Mr. Camp's article is definitive, so I'll just add that the one I owned (non-P6) fed Gold Dot 115-grain JHPs without a problem.

The Sig P225 and P228 are the best-handling Sigs I've ever encountered, and the only question of which is how many rounds you want in the magazine.

I've also owned a P226 and a P229 in 9x19mm and they didn't match the others in shooting sweetness.

One thing I forgot to add is the roll pins that holds the breechblock in really need to be changed every 5000-6000 rounds. That and they shouldn't be reused if they are ever taken out.

Rinspeed is correct, and that's my only gripe about the breed. A quick visual inspection will confirm if the roll pins are wandering out, however.

I absolutely love my P6s. I've had a few other Sigs (220, 228, 226), and none feel as good in the hand as the P6. It needs a little trigger work and visible sights, but other than that, its a great pistol.

all sigs are expensive but you get what you pay for unlike other firearms that are way over priced and are junk. like i said before the single stack mag killed them, for a CCW gun they cant be beat i have 2 and wont give up either, my fiancee is a Sig nazi its the only gun she will shoot and anytime some one comes in the shop she helps them they usually leave with a Sig of some type. do i get mad nope because that person just bought the best defensive gun money can buy. for me its the 1911 but the Sig is in a tie for the lead and all others fall very short.

Buy one. You will not be disappointed. There are a bunch of the West German Police P6/P225 being sold right now for $375 or less. What a bargin. I highly recommend you snap one up before they are all gone.

Here is mine. I love it.

1BLINDREF covered it well. If you pick up a P6, Top Gun Supply should be your next stop. They have what you need and at reasonable prices and great service.

I would also recommend you pick up one of the armorer's CD's from them. Its well worth the $21 they get for it. It shows you how to detail strip and reassemble most all the SIG's and is very easy to follow.

I recently picked a P6 up from Ganders for $350. You get the gun, two mags, and a holster.

They had guns with both the heel mag release and the button type mag releases. They do come both ways, so pay attention when you look. I got the pick of three guns they had left with the button release.

I've seen them anywhere from great to piss poor finish wise. If your worried about it, I wouldnt buy it over the web unless you get good pics of the exact gun.

My DA trigger was very heavy, about twice that of my other SIG's. I picked up a P225 parts kit, and a P225 hammer spring (its actually called a mainspring), and a couple of mag springs from Top Gun Supply.

The mainspring brought the DA trigger down to what my other SIG's triggers are like. Its a $4 fix, $25 if you buy the CD so you know how to get it in. :)

I also picked up a set of Meprolight night sights for it. The P6 comes with a set of plain, black sights, or at least mine did. I have the sight tool, and it too is well worth the money, especially if you have a bunch of SIG's. It will remove and install sights as well as adjust them. I've replaced the night sights on a couple of used guns I have, and sold each set of the ones I took off on EBay for about half the price of a new set. That right there paid for the tool.

Now that I went through all that, I'm willing to bet I probably could have picked up a P225 in better shape for about what I now have into the P6. You may want to look around and see before you buy, unless your happy with the P6 as it comes. You can also probably find a CPO P226 or P229 for about the same money, and have a high cap gun in a hotter caliber to boot.

My P6 shoots well and seems to feed hollow points just fine. I do seem to have a problem with my thumb hitting the slide stop while shooting, allowing the slide to go forward on an empty mag. I shoot "thumbs forward", and so far this is the only SIG I have that I've had the problem with. I think is due to the grip being thiner than the rest and my thumb ends up closer to the stop.

DEPRESSED!

I am upset because I paid significantly MORE for my P-6 and am now trying to sell it.

I will say that the blue on mine is near 100 %.

Military Gun Supply, where you got yours, advertises theirs at 25 - 75% blue. Do you think that is about right?

Regardless, I am going to lower the price on mine.

Thanks for the link!

Mike,
The pair I got are probably int the 70-80% area. They've definitely got some holster wear, but mechanically they are great. Don't feel bad as I think a P6 in the condition of yours seems to be the exception, not the rule. :)

Has anyone gotten a look at the "arsenal refurbished" P-6's the military gun supply is selling? Is that upgrade worth the $30?

I was wondering about that too, im going to call them up and ask what exactly they do.

@hokkmike: I can't buy right now, and I'm not sure its exactly what i want. Thats why I'm trying to get as much information as possible. I usually buy new, but new Sigs are definitely expensive but with the P225s the price is right.
