I know Texas has some very pro-conceal-carry laws...

Do the laws vary by county/city much like they do here in California? Or are they same across Texas? I'm just curious...

Texas has the same laws from border to border. The DAs in different locales will prosecute for different things but the law is the same everywhere.

Texas does NOT have "some very pro-conceal-carry" anything.

As "shall issue" states go we're actually pretty onerous on the citizenry who want to pack. There are a multitude of pllaces where carry is banned by law and all places can legally ban it by putting up a sign. It has to be a specific sign, but it still just has to be a sign.

The "training" class goes for between 85 and 145 dollars a class for a full 10-15 hours, required, by law. The class allows you to send off paperwork AND another 140 dollars to get the DPS and the FBI to root around in your personal, criminal and medical records to approve you.

We have to declare we're armed to LE and Magistrates during "official business." Our license is invalid for legal carry if it is not on you at the time. So, you ARE carrying illegally if you left it at home. You can't just bring it to court and show it to the judge.

If you qualify with a wheel gun you can only carry a revolver. For some reason qualifying with a semi will let you carry either.

There's a bunch more, enough to fill a whole little book. Suffice it to say: Texas, contrary to idle gossip and popular belief, is NOT a bastion of gun freedom. In fact we ave about as many stupid gun/weapon laws as just about any other nanny state. This is not the wild west ... heck it's barely better than back east.

You do have to show your license. I have never had any problems from LEO's though I have only been stopped a few times. I have mostly gotten verbal or written warnings instead of speeding tickets as well.

Yeah, if you were expecting some sort of gun paradise, Texas isn't it, but few states are. The CHL is takes some time and money, but it is not that difficult. Most people I meet are pretty easy going about gun ownership though most just mess with deer hunting or shotguns. The good thing is there are a lot of pistol and rifles ranges in most places.

The good thing is the self defense laws are pretty good for the most part.

Thanks for the info... I'm actually not seeking a "gun paradise" I was just curious about the laws in Texas.

A lot of people in California constantly complain about gun laws here, and concealed carry is a big one. Seems Texas is much more lax than California, that's for sure.

Texas is MUCH more lax than Cali. For instance:

I was visiting relatives in PRK when one of them told me pf his unbelievable fortune in procuring a Glock .40 S&W when his father-in-law died. Okay, I said, good for you. He says, "Don't you understand how big this is? I have a HANDGUN!" "I have several." I say. His jaw drops, literally. "How did you swing THAT?!" "I walked into a gun shop and bought them." I said. He didn't believe me. So I showed him my CHL license. Another jaw drop. "How are you doing all of this? Do you have friends in high places or something?" "Just one." I said. "The Constitution."

I will NEVER live in California. Their State Constitution doesnt guarantee RKBA.
'Nuff said.

I agree with the above comments. Texas gun laws are better than say California or Massachusettes of course but they are still way too strict and victimless.

Florida is a much more friendly gun state.

HKUSP45C is, of course, exactly right about both the laws here and in his opinion about them. We are somewhat restrictive. However, each time the legislature meets it seems like we get a little more sense in the law. Previously, you COULD NOT carry into a house of worship. Now you can, so long as the priest/minister/rabbi/shaman/witch doctor doesn't post a 30.06 sign.

Texas ain't heaven (I know, that's blasphemy - I'm donning my flame retardant suit as you read this), but it is considerably closer to it than my previous home state, the dark and fascist Peoples Republic of New Jersey. There you can't carry AT ALL (well, not unless you are a great friend of the governor or others in very high positions), and you'll go to jail for owning a magazine that can hold more than 15 rounds of ammo. Yes, really. I left that shiitehole state with about 200 years in prison sitting 18 inches behind my rear end, and I'm glad to live where you can own any damned thing that you can pay for.
